Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivian Hall.
Hi Vivian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My now business partner, Jenna McEwan, & I were working at a barn in Topanga teaching lessons, & when that barn got sold to new owners I just had a feeling that change was coming, so I asked Jenna to lunch one day and said, if the barn ever closes would you want to start our own program? She said sure and that was kind of the end of it. Then a year or so later Covid happened and the barn decided to close. Jenna and I purchased a handful of the school horses and moved to a place in Agoura to get our business going. We stayed there for about a year when we needed to find a slightly better fit for our program and found our spot in Moorpark.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, it’s all just kind of rolled along. We were lucky enough to be able to purchase horses that we were already familiar with and had already been in a school program. We were lucky enough to already have a client list that would also be looking for a new barn to ride at due to the old one closing. We were lucky enough to find the barn in Agoura when we really needed somewhere to go on short notice, and we were lucky enough to have a friend in Moorpark who knew of and suggested our current location when we were looking to move. So with major gratitude I can say, besides the normal ups and downs of horse ownership, it’s been a fairly smooth transition.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a boutique riding school specializing in 3Day Eventing with and emphasis on dressage. We teach lower level evening/dressage lessons and offer training for horses as well.
We really want to make nice thoughtful riders for nice thoughtful horses. We really want to facilitate a space that helps shape riders who are thoughtful, correct and mostly self sufficient. We want to shape riders that understand that the most important part of horsemanship is the friendship and communication between horse and rider in and out of the tack.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I feel like our circumstances were special and not everyone is afforded the position we were in when starting a business. However I do believe we must trust in ourselves as much we trust in those we love the most. Go for it. You never feel ready, because we never know what the outcome will be, but you’ll be ok. I think because we’re doing something we love so much we get to be our authentic selves, which people can feel that. It makes for a fun learning environment. Feels good to be at the barn. If you can create a space like that for yourself I believe the business will come.
