Today we’d like to introduce you to Toushonta Hogan.
Toushonta is the creator of Scentsational Soaps, an all-natural skincare line for both men and women. A modern-day Renaissance woman described as always having an entrepreneurial spirit, she graduated from California State University with a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources. Upon attaining her degree, she set her sights on seeking a career. After many interviews with a drastic economic hit, she received no response and soon decided to take matters in her own hands by establishing her own business – one that would offer increased responsibility and freedom, while allowing her to spend time with her family.
After years of making glycerin soaps by hand, a visit to the Strawberry Festival in California inspired her to evolve her hobby into a successful business. With research and persistence she devised an all-natural beauty formula and launched Scentsational Soaps in 2007. The company offers a variety of spa-quality products including handmade soaps, body butters, bath salts, body mist and much more.
Since establishing her business, she has expanded her products to several boutiques, and natural markets both in and out of state, she has been a guest speaker for the Society of Extraordinary Women on two occasions, Gorgeous Ladies annual luncheon, Women of Carson, and has been on the panel of Powherful Women’s Brunch. She continuously empowers and encourages women from all walks of life thru both her business and personal life.
She enjoys giving back to Love My Neighbor Foundation and they Feed the Hungry organizations by donating soap to connect and re-build the lives of the homeless along with an infectious smile. She also coaches her daughter and has helped her to start her own vegan friendly nail polish line at the tender age of 10.
Shaiann has been seen on “The Real” (Kiddie Pool) Talk show, Teen Boss Magazine and placed 2nd in the 2017 Urban League Biz Camp sponsored by NFTE. She has also been awarded by the NAACP Women in Spotlight as a “Young Entrepreneur” in 2016. Recently, she was recognized by the Black Business Women Rock as the “her Eyes Matter Award. It’s no wonder Toushonta was awarded the Stand Up Mom in 2016 by Phenomenal Girls. She is also a devoted mother of two, ages 13 & 15 and a wife to Mr. Kevin Hogan of 14 years. Toushonta has been recognized by the NAACP in 2016 as a Woman in Leadership. Throughout the community she has helped countless organizations to include, The Persona Program, Celebrate Life Cancer Ministry, Mom Suite, Sisters Network, The Positive Results Corporation, Phenomenal Girls Do Phenomenal Things, First Ladies of Los Angeles, Kids in the Spotlight and host of other organizations. She also has given back to Normandie Christian & Woodcrest Elementary school by way of fundraisers thru her business. She also sits on the board of Foundations for Second Chances as the Secretary. An organization that utilizes hands on education, mentoring, health awareness and community service to maximize the potential of youth.
When not as busy, Toushonta enjoys traveling, cooking, shopping and living. Her favorite scripture John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. She hopes to inspire women and men alike to pursue their own aspirations so that they too can experience the beauty and passion she enjoys. It is her personal mission to help others thru creativity live a life of abundance while allowing people to connect with their inner power.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It DEFINITELY has not been a smooth road on this journey. We’ve encountered countless struggles along the way. To include the loss of property in 2007 when I first decided to start Scentsational Soaps, time management, staying consistent when at times I wanted to give up, setting up at a few unsuccessful events, building a business with little to no money, bad collaborations, and learning the industry in general. I embrace my journey as I have learned MANY lessons along the way, which has helped me coach my daughter to not make those same mistakes.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Scentsational Soaps story. Tell us more about the business.
Scentsational Soaps is a handmade bath & body business. We specialize in handmade products that revives dry and / or dull skin without the use of palm oil, making our products vegan friendly and unique. We take pride in being able to help countless organizations within our community to make a difference in the lives of others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe “luck” has never played a role within my business. However, having FAITH has. Faith has been tried and tested over and over again. And it has never steered me wrong. There are days when I don’t know, how? What? or When? But when I activate my faith, things turn completely around. When I don’t activate my faith and / or pray my day seems to be a bit cluttered and unorganized.
