Today we’d like to introduce you to Theodore Ramirez.
Theodore, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My musical journey started early on being exposed to whatever my brothers and sisters would listen to. Music from Celine Dion to Hatebreed to Chopin and I loved it all. It interested me so much that I wanted to perform and write, which led me to join my middle school band class. I had joined because I loved music so much already and really wanted to get into percussion. During that time, my family pitched in and got me my own drum set. I really fell in love with playing and even more so with music. Since then, I have never really stopped. I’ve been blessed by a touring/session musician for the last 10+ years and have been able to be around some really great people. During that time is when I made the decision to invest more into composing, specifically for Film and TV. I’ve always been drawn to writing music and there’s been a place in my heart for film music. There was a shift in the seasons of my life and I followed. I’m not the best with verbally expressing myself and this showed me new ways to speak.
Something that’s kept driving me has been the reality that I’ll always want more. I’ve never been satisfied with where I’m at in my career. There have been a lot of struggles, hardships, and doubts on this journey but at the same time, so much potential, hope, and excitement in doing what I love. And to continue working towards that because it’s absolutely the only way for me. Happiness is the goal. Often I feel like I still barely know what I’m doing and yet, I’m super blessed with the opportunities I do have and have had so far. With all that being said, as of late last year, my journey has led me from my hometown of Paso Robles down to Los Angeles as a pivotal step towards continuing a happy life and career. I’m blessed to have been composing during the pandemic and blessed to have support from friends and family here.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not, but that’s what makes this interesting and makes you grow. My biggest struggles have been with myself. I’m fortunate that not many people have tried to take/tear me down over the years. Like many other creatives I’m sure I struggle frequently with depression, anxiety, self-worth, insecurities, and doubt. And with anyone who can relate to that, you know how hard being productive can be sometimes. It wasn’t until I identified those things in my life and took responsibility that I was able to begin healing. Continuing to be aware of what can get in the way is key. It’s still a struggle.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Overall, I’m a musician and creator. I specialize in Film/TV Composition as well as drums. I’m most proud of having a place in this community and being able to continue contributing my voice here. What sets me apart? I am me and I’m constantly refining my voice. I’ve tried to be like other people and I’m not very good at it.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Happiness and freedom will always be at the core of my plans and goals. There’s no big changes or plans just yet but I try to be ready for those as they arise. A modern cabin in the woods and working on a Netflix show would be a lovely scenario.
