Today we’d like to introduce you to Thatcher Horrocks.
Hi Thatcher, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has been a part of my life since before I was born. I grew up in the most musical family in the neighborhood. My mother – a piano teacher, raised and home-educated us while supplementing my father’s income in our single-income household. She sang to me and had me listening to classics while I was still in the womb. As soon as I could talk (and even before I could talk properly), I was singing. At around 8 years old, she put me in a church choir, where I remained for many years. I attribute the roots of my love for performance to these years of my life.
Although my mom tried her best to teach me piano, I never fully connected with the instrument. I wrestled with the idea of learning music, dabbling in different instruments but never fully becoming inspired by any of them. That all changed the day my sister showed me a few guitar chords, I was instantly hooked.
Somehow, I always found hours in the day to practice, with sessions that often stretched to five or six hours at a time. Being home-educated even allowed me to study guitar with a tutor for school credit. My first performance accompanying myself was at a Guitar Center in Los Angeles, where I played a very rough rendition of “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” by John Mayer, and I haven’t stopped since.
Everything shifted during my high school years. I started an indie-soul acoustic duo with my sister, Lily Horrocks, called Sunflower Academy, and we began gigging frequently at restaurants and bars throughout Los Angeles. Along the way, we also recorded music for licensing companies, which led to our songs being featured in major film and television projects on platforms such as Hulu, HBO, and Paramount.
When I transferred to public school in my junior year, I discovered an incredible community in the choir and theater programs that further deepened my love for performing. In theater, I earned the John Raitt Awards for Youth Broadway Artist Alliance Scholarship for my performance as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables. That honor sent me to New York on a full-ride scholarship, where I studied with Broadway actors and music professionals.
During my senior year, I continued expanding my live performance experience both by expanding my chops at gigs and by joining a group of friends to compete in the school-wide Battle of the Bands as lead singer and guitarist. We went on to win with a resounding vote from the judges.
After high school, I continued gigging with Sunflower Academy and was recruited by a brother duo as lead vocalist and guitarist. Together, we formed a rock group called The Spinouts. The band continues to grow rapidly, marked by the release of our debut single, “Gimme Your Love,” and opportunities to open for major acts such as Fitz and The Tantrums and Two Feet in Mammoth, California.
We perform frequently all over the South Bay at some of its largest music events, including BeachLife Festival, where we’re scheduled to perform on May 3, 2026, alongside artists such as James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, My Morning Jacket, and Peach Pit.
These days, much of my focus is on weddings and private events because I love providing music for life’s most meaningful moments. I’ve performed at hundreds of events, and I couldn’t be happier doing what I love. Music is what I eat, sleep, and breathe. I’ve been performing longer than I even knew what the word “performing” meant, and I bring that same passion to every stage and celebration I’m part of.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. A career in the arts means hearing “no” countless times, whether it’s an audition that doesn’t land or a gig that goes to someone else. However, those moments have given me the opportunity to develop thick skin and a deep sense of resilience.
I’m not one to give up on a goal I truly want to achieve. In many ways, not always getting the desired outcome has strengthened my determination and shaped the work ethic I bring to every performance and opportunity.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an event performer specializing in live music for weddings, corporate events, and private celebrations such as birthdays and milestone parties. I create solo arrangements of popular songs we all know and love, delivering a familiar soundtrack with a personal, acoustic touch.
I’m known for my strong, expressive voice, engaging stage presence, and genuine ability to connect with an audience. Whether I’m setting a relaxed, elegant tone or energizing a room full of guests, my goal is always the same: to create a memorable experience that feels both meaningful and effortlessly enjoyable.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my most memorable childhood moments happened at a choir concert where I was scheduled to sing my very first solo, a daunting task for a young performer. The piece featured multiple student solos, and I knew exactly when mine was supposed to begin. So when the choir director ushered me to the microphone at the wrong moment, I panicked and blurted out, “IT’S NOT MY PART!” loudly enough to derail the entire section of music and elicit an audible reaction from the crowd.
I still remember the horrified look on my dad’s face in the audience. Mortified by the reaction around me, I ran off stage and into my mom’s arms, completely overwhelmed with embarrassment.
Strangely, that’s not why the memory stays with me.
The following year, I was invited to perform an operatic duet with one of the choir directors. I practiced relentlessly, determined not to repeat the past. and when the performance came, I crushed it. That moment became one of my earliest memories of pure joy on stage, the feeling of connecting with the music, the audience, and the excitement of wanting to do it all over again!
