Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Colson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Taylor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was extremely shy growing up. I wouldn’t play with other kids and I’d hide behind my mom whenever people were around. I started singing when I was five years old and was able to get on stage and perform with no problem, despite being painfully shy.
I fell in love with Broadway and did a few Broadway programs in NYC. At age 17, I began to get more serious about making music into a career. That’s when I started writing music and taking trips to LA to work with different writers and producers. I then made the move to Los Angeles a few days after my 21st birthday. I’ve spent the past few years really working on my craft and developing my sound. I have an incredible team now and had the opportunity to open for blackbear here in the US. I toured with lovelytheband and Rad Horror in Europe last November and now have released two singles (‘Hurt Me’ and ‘Tiffany’s’) in 2020 with more coming in early 2021. I’m very excited to perform live as soon as it’s safe to do so!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My parents always told me that nothing worth having comes easy. I could not agree with this statement more! The music industry is an extremely tough one and I’d be lying if I said it’s been a smooth road. It’s truly a rollercoaster.
I think it’s important to struggle so that you can really appreciate your accomplishments. I’ve been told “no” so many times… I met with different writers, producers, managers, etc. and nothing ever seemed like a fit. Everything happens for a reason because I was able to find an incredible team that believes in me. We’ve really created a family and lots of exciting things are finally happening. I think the trials and tribulations were setting me up to be able to handle future success.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a classically trained singer and have always been drawn to the theater. I’ve definitely tried to incorporate a theatrical feel to my music. I’m trying to write as much as I can and want to keep growing as a songwriter.
I had the incredible opportunity to open for some wonderful artists – especially lovelytheband in Europe last November. That was a very proud moment for me. I got to play my first shows in Scandanavia… Crazy!!
As for what sets me apart from others, that’s a really hard question. There are so many other female artists that I love and respect. I feel that we all have our individual and special qualities. Most people talk about my voice, lyrics, and personal style – I’ve been described as a ‘throwback’ chanteuse, both musically and stylistically – but with a thoroughly modern aesthetic. So I think ultimately, that’s what makes me unique.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance. Being willing to learn and continue to grow both personally and artistically, even through the difficult times. Always move forward!
