Today we’d like to introduce you to Lillian Vince.
Lillian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I studied Theatre in college and eventually noticed that one of my favorite parts of rehearsal and production was creating the makeup for my character. I loved the fully realized image that came together when makeup, hair, and costume were realized. I moved to New York after college and worked in theatre as a director and prop designer, and realized I missed developing characters. I started studying at Makeup Designory in New York and began my make-up career.
My work began to come alive when I started combining beauty makeup with special effects. I love finding a dark, sinister, or visceral edge in my beauty work. Likewise, there are moments when the beauty of symmetry, line, and color contrast can be found in even a gory SFX makeup.
I moved to Los Angeles from New York to help expand my work in film, and I’ve been lucky enough to part of amazing projects within film, photo, and live events.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve been lucky enough to have lots of support and encouragement, but like all freelancers, I’ve struggled to find work and line up gigs. Working in independent film allows to me work with committed, hardworking casts and crews, but finding good jobs with good people can often be a matter of luck. I’m fortunate to have many wonderful collaborators, and I’m always working to expand my network and make new connections.
What role has luck had in your life and career?
I’m not sure if I would describe my career in terms of either good luck or bad luck. I’ve definitely experienced pivotal moments that have felt “meant to be,” or like fate. In general, though, I can look at my successes, and think, “Yes, I worked hard and made a bold choice, and it paid off!” I can look at my failures the same way (and there have definitely been failures!) and know where I went wrong, and how I’ll have to change and improve the next time.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being able to be flexible in a moment, to handle an unexpected situation–whether on set or in prep– with a deft, calm attitude, and the ability to be resourceful has served me extremely well.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I love the ease and freedom Angelenos have to create vibrant social circles and make lasting bonds. I have had so much support and fun not only developing a professional network here but also a wonderful group of friends with diverse professions and passions.
I don’t enjoy the lack of reliable and quick public transit and walking friendly areas. The New Yorker in me misses being able to walk almost everywhere!
