Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Goldman.
Hi Sydney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story was anything but ordinary. My entire life, I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. I grew up in sports, got regularly injured, and saw an orthopedist often, but I always wanted to be a surgeon. Why? Great question, I have no idea, but I did. My family said I wanted to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
I ended up moving across the country to attend Brandeis University, where I played college softball while double majoring in Biology and Health: Science, Society, and Policy on the pre-med track. By the time my senior fall rolled around, I was on track to finish all my pre-med requirements by the time I graduated. My last pre-med class was physics, and while I LOVED life sciences, the physical sciences were not my jam. I ended up getting mono my senior fall, had to drop physics, and re-route my entire life.
Now what? I swore up and down I would never take another physics class, so what did I do next? I turned to Google and searched, “What can I do with degrees in biology and healthcare?” Chiropractic. Yes, that’s it, that is what I am going to do. So, that is exactly what I did. I knew I loved preventative-based healthcare after studying abroad in Mexico the summer after my freshman year of college. So with that, I knew my next steps.
I reached out to one of my dad’s best friends, who is a chiropractor, and I told him my new plan. While he was not on board initially, he advised me on where to go to school and the next steps in the process. I applied to Palmer West, got in, found a roommate, found an apartment, submitted my deposit, and I was ready for the next step. Smooth sailing from there, right? Not quite.
As I mentioned, I played college softball. We had a weekend series in St. Louis. I was excited, it was the start of my last season of college softball, I had post-grad plans, and everything was looking up. Except when we landed in St. Louis, I got an email from Palmer West saying that the lease for the school was not being renewed and they were no longer accepting my class as an incoming class. Now what?
I reached back out to my dad’s best friend and, again, asked him where I was going to school. He immediately said Parker University, a chiropractic school in Dallas. So then, again, I applied, got in, found roommates, found an apartment, and off I went to Dallas.
Again, what seemed like smooth sailing from there was halted. I had never had a major injury in my life; I was lucky enough to make it almost completely through my softball career. I was awarded an opportunity to play international softball for the Israel National Team. I was competing in Brno, Czech Republic, with the U22 National Team when I felt a pop in my shoulder while I was pitching. I knew something was wrong immediately, but I had an entire summer of softball left – my last summer playing – so I dealt with it and pretended everything was okay. I had two weeks between returning from my softball summer abroad and moving. In those two weeks, I packed up my life in California and went off to Texas. At Parker, I saw my student-intern for continuous care and she was able to rehab my shoulder back to full strength.
At Parker, I fell in love with the rehab and sports world of the chiropractic profession. During my clinical time at Parker University, I was in the Strength and Human Performance pod, focusing on movement assessment, rehab, and strength patterning to improve function and reduce pain. My clinical interests include injury prevention, movement quality, and performance-based care. I’ve completed certifications in RockTape FMT (Basic and Advanced), FAKTR, and SFMA Levels 1 and 2, and I’m currently working toward my Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and International Federation of Sports Chiropractic certifications.
Now, I am working at Synergy Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, helping individuals of all ages live the lives that they love.
We’ve been impressed with Synergy Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a multi-disciplinary office, providing both chiropractic care and physical therapy in office. From our website, “At Synergy Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, we specialize in providing top-quality treatments that bridge the gap between sports rehabilitation and corrective exercise. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or aiming to improve movement quality, our focus is on restoring functional strength, enhancing mobility, and preventing future injuries through targeted, evidence-based techniques. Our team of physical therapists and chiropractors will tailor a treatment plan specific for your needs.”
Personally, I LOVE the sports world. Helping athletes recover from injuries, maintain range of motion, decrease stiffness, and perform at their best, is what makes me excited. The benefits of preventative-based care, as opposed to treatment-based care, kept me in the game consistently when I was an athlete. In addition to your typical chiropractic care, we have a variety of modalities that I use in-office. Our main modalities used are cervical traction, Class IV laser, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), ultrasound, electrical stimulation, compression boots, and newly added shockwave therapy!
On an academic level, I’ve completed certifications in RockTape FMT (Basic and Advanced), FAKTR, and SFMA Levels 1 and 2, and I’m currently working toward my Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) and International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) certifications.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy? That’s easy. Family, friends, and the outdoors. As cliché as it sounds, these three have been constants in my life. After not living in LA for the last 7.5 years, it made me truly understand how much I love my family and just how happy they make me. Living 10 minutes from one set of grandparents and 20 minutes from my parents means the world. Friends. I absolutely adore my friends. No matter how often I see them, or don’t since we all run on wildly different schedules, I can pick up with each of them like no time had passed. And lastly, the outdoors. Hiking, kayaking, softball, and fishing to name a few. Being outside allows me to disconnect from the “real world” and just spend time with the people, places, and things that keep me grounded.
Of course seeing my patients get better consistently makes me happy too. In my office, I love to celebrate the little wins. You were able to go one day without pain after chronic pain? Amazing! You were able to pick up your child without pain? Great! Range of motion improved? Outstanding. These are all things that make me happy.
