Meet Stacy Newgent of Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Newgent.

Hi Stacy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a graphic designer and photo editor originally from the Midwest. I moved to Long Beach in November 2021, and since then I’ve been completely obsessed with all the dogs—there are so many cute dogs here.

Last spring (2025), I had the idea to make a zine about the dogs in my neighborhood. You know the “Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?” song from Sesame Street? I wanted to do something like that, but for dogs. I had never drawn a dog in my life, but I figured if I kept them loose and a little messy, they’d still be really cute.

I asked neighbors to send me photos and put up a few flyers around the neighborhood—and a lot of people responded. Before I even finished the zine (which is still not done, haha), people started asking if I could do portraits of their pets.

I told them, “Of course—I’d love to. But, my portraits are pretty janky.” And that was the start of Janky Pets.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was looking for work when I started making Janky Pets so I had plenty of time- zero money. I spent most of my time applying for jobs but still had a lot of time to draw and paint, that was lucky. I had no luck finding work so eventually I decided to lean into Janky Pets. I changed my website, took down the graphic design work and started putting up flyers, Fb marketplace ads etc. It’s still challenging, but growing. I’m starting to work on cards, wrapping paper, mugs etc.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make janky pets on Bristol paper with real art supplies- like paint, ink, pencils- they aren’t digital- not AI. I think people enjoy getting something one of a kind, made just for them even if they aren’t perfect. I fall in love with every little face and want them to be so cute. I also want them to be affordable so people can give them as gifts. I hadn’t considered how many people would want portraits to remember their pets, or give gifts to friends who lost their pets. I hate it when pets die, but I’m glad I can offer something that feels really meaningful.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Painting on canvas takes a lot longer. I had to take down canvas options for now because I got so backed up. When I put them back up I probably will need to charge more for those. Also- shipping is expensive. I’ve learned a lot of lessons this year, I don’t know if those are most important- seems like I learn something every month.
