Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Anderson.
Kristin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in NYC as a model/actress turned makeup artist. One of my first jobs was doing hair and make up for 20 girls a day 3 looks each. Needless to say, I learned a LOT really fast. I then used my skills as a manicurist on set and worked for Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Mademoiselle, pretty much every other magazine around and always with the top fashion photographers.
I started taking pictures around that time because I wanted more beauty shots for my portfolio. My first camera was the Nikon F3 with I still have. I will still shoot a roll of film every now and then for my personal projects.
I fell in love with faces, reality and portraiture pretty quickly and have been doing that ever since.
Has it been a smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Hmmm. Define smooth! Haha! Well, life is never really smooth, it’s the challenges that define us. That’s why I am still so in love with portraiture. Every person is different and beautiful and has an amazing story. Every. Single. One. Me included. 😉
Photography wasn’t always my business. I spent years “finding” my style. Feeling out what I loved. And I am not done. It’s a process of my life. My evolution. Photography now IS my business and is what I love, but I do always think about going on a few acting auditions. I guess I’m just in love with our stories.
When you look back, can you point to a period when you wanted to quit or a period that was really frustrating?
Quitting is not an option. It did take me awhile to make a definite choice to be a photographer and really go for it, though. The toughest thing has been taking my creative mind and learning how to make a business from that. Learning how to build a business from the ground up with no business training or experience has for sure been the most challenging aspect for me. I am first and foremost an artist!
What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
Have fun with it, learn the technicals and then let it all go and play. And take some marketing and business classes!
What are you looking forward to?
I live one day at a time without focusing too much on the future. I put my all in every day and hopefully that will create the best possible future for me and my family.
