Meet Sofia Storti

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Storti.

Sofia Storti

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Raised from a Puerto Rican mother and a Venezuelan father in what I like to call the melting pot that South Florida is. I grew up in a city called Pembroke Pines, which is about 20 minutes away from Miami. From a young age I always knew I wanted to pursue music/performing in some way. I explored that passion through many different outlets like dance, band, drumline, choir, and drama. But the outlet that stuck with me the most was musical theater. As my senior year of high school began, I knew that I wanted to pursue this as a career, so I went ahead and applied to a performing arts school in New York. Luckily, I was accepted, and I began my musical theater journey in the fall of 2018. I fell in love with the city, the lifestyle, and live theater. This chapter was short-lived due to the pandemic hitting right after my graduation in March of 2020. I hesitantly moved back to South Florida to be with my family because know one really knew how long this madness would last. Somewhere in the summer of 2020, my wonderful friends brought up the idea of finishing our degree online. Our school not only had a campus in New York but also in Los Angeles. We gave it some thought and decided to apply for the spring semester in February of 2021. In January of 2021, my two roommates and I moved to a city where we’ve never been to prior to the move and in the peak of the pandemic. To say I was nervous and terrified is an understatement to say the least, but I took that leap of faith and said goodbye to my family once again. It’s been 3 years since I’ve lived in Los Angeles so far and let me just say all of these amazing opportunities and people that I’ve met along the way would have never happened if I didn’t take that leap of faith. So far, I’ve been able to book a gig at a Cuban speakeasy and sing salsa music every single weekend. This definitely made my Puerto Rican mother very proud and my little Puerto Rican heart very happy. I’m also very grateful to be able to sing at another bar on Thursdays with amazing musicians and artists that inspire me every single day. Being in this city has helped me create art almost every day and meet such amazing musicians that push me to grow within my own craft.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Growth wouldn’t happen without all those bumps along the way, right? Self-doubt has been my biggest enemy. In a lot of situations, I get in my own way. Also not having my family by my side was also scary. Moving to a completely new city, I had to start from zero again. New friends, new environment, new job, etc. Being an artist comes with a lot of anxiety with not knowing if you’ll ever “make it,” whatever that means to you, of course. In these past 3 years, I’ve faced a lot of rejection and redirections. The thought of making my family proud has also always been in the back of my mind. Am I doing enough? Will I ever be enough?

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a performer and I specialize in musical theater and songwriting. My main focus right now is performing and singing salsa/Latin music and also doing background vocals for several artists around Los Angeles. I have an array of musical inspirations and all that comes through within my music. I grew up listening to a lot of salsa, reggae, reggaeton, and R&B. I pull inspiration from all of those genres, and I try to come up with a new sound that hasn’t been heard yet. I also love to use my musical theatre background in all of my live performances through storytelling.

What matters most to you?
My family and friends. I would not be the person I am today if it weren’t for all of those people. They have all helped me see my value in some way or another. I have learned the most from these individuals. Every day I am so grateful to have my family and friends in my life. Another thing that matters to me the most is living life to the FULLEST. I don’t want to look back and regret anything. I remind myself that in order to find success in life, you have to fail. I would much rather live my life fully through failure than to play it safe and wonder what if?
