Meet Sofia Rose Smith of Ceremony + Intuitive Coaching for Queer + Feminist Visionaries

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Rose Smith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Back in 2015, I quit a job I loved that had become toxic. I didn’t have a plan in place about what I would do next. I had the sense that I wanted to begin something new: I had the sense that I didn’t want to find another job in the non-profit sector. There was a whisper, or deep knowing, inside me that kept telling me that I was meant to do something totally different than I’d ever done, even though I had no idea what that was. So I quit my job and trusted that I would find my way (which was super scary but also freeing).

During that time, I also got married and my partner and I walked El Camino de Santiago (an ancient, spiritual pilgrimage across Spain) for our honeymoon. El Camino is a purification process: walking 10-20 miles a day for a few weeks is like meditation: all your shit rises to the surface, but you’re left with stillness, clarity, (sometimes pain), and joy. I felt rooted after that trip, and when I got home, I started experimenting. I asked myself: how could I be who I am and make a living in the world in a way that’s entirely new to me? From there, I launched my first online program (Spirit Poems, a writing course).

After that, I just kept experimenting! I had been trained as a counselor and an intuitive guide, and so I began to weave that into my work. Later, I was attuned to Reiki, and that has become part of my work. I have been practicing ceremony and meditation for a long time, and have done a lot of my own healing, and those lessons are alive in all my sessions and classes. There’s a lot in my work that began way before “my business” started. It was like all these seeds inside me were waiting to bloom. And in a way, I believe that’s one of the many ways I support clients: I help them move energy, help them let go, help them tend to the seeds already within that want to bloom.

And — I’m queer and feminist and holding the hands of folks like me through the shadows: through hard times and tears, through pain, fear and imbalance, and I help them see what’s beautiful and clear and on purpose in their lives, while also creating a safe space for them to just be where they are at. So now, I see myself as a practitioner and a facilitator: I am gifted at creating a space for groups and individuals to tap into their innate power to know themselves. That’s what I do and kind of how I got there.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth road? ABSOLUTELY NOT! 🙂 I mean, sure, there is flow and magic along the way. But — from what I can tell, entrepreneurship is one of the most challenging paths there are. It’s vulnerable, it’s risky, it’s a lot of experimentation and failure, and wondering if what you’re doing is going to work out. There’s a lot of healing I’ve needed to do on myself as a business owner: like making friends with money, learning to trust myself and honor my worth.

Also – finding a community of other folks inventing these new, feminist ways of doing business has been essential. It can be hard to be an anti-capitalist business owner! LOL. It’s almost an oxymoron. But I am also beginning to understand that I live in capitalism and that in order to be well, I need to earn a wonderful, exciting income, and yes, I am allowed to do that.

Coming from the non-profit world before this, I had a lot of martyrdom-like complexes (saving the world, it’s not about the paycheck, etc) that I’ve had to work on as a business owner. I also believe many women and femmes struggle with fully owning how fucking brilliant we are and how worthy our work is. It takes time, but I do my best to believe in myself and to reach out when I’m having a hard day or week.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ceremony + Intuitive Coaching for Queer + Feminist Visionaries – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a small business – just me! I do healing work with queer and trans folks, people of color, and feminists. I am most proud of the ways I have stayed true to who I am and who I care about in my business. There are many ways I could have altered my practice to serve a wider audience — but the queer + trans community, in particular, are my people. I specialize in creating liberation-based, radical, love-centered coaching. For example, I’m launching the second round of the Queer & Feminist Visionary Immersion right now – a six-month deep dive into power + purpose.

I facilitate circles that engage the intersections of spirit, justice, identity, creative practice, ritual, healing oppression, finding your soul work, and more. I think I am known for being someone who creates community and holds space with a lot of strength and gentleness at the same time. In the coaching and healing arts world, I stand out because of my focus on working with LGBTQ folks and working in a way that helps us connect to our ancestors, and remember who we are and why we are here.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
OMG, I love LA. What I like best is that it’s familiar to me. I’m a native! In fact, I’m a third-generation Angeleno (my great-grandparents migrated here from Mexico, and made home in Boyle Heights back in 1910). So I feel at home here. What I don’t love is obvious: driving and traffic. I also don’t love that it can be a physically isolating city simply because it’s hard to get around.
