Meet Sierra Love

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Love.

Sierra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The story of how I got my start is perhaps atypical- I originally began crochet as an activity to help me learn to sit still! I’ve always had a restlessness that I found at odds with my need to watch film (as education for my work as an actor), and maybe it backfired on me because, one slouchy beanie later, I was hooked (pun intended).

Living here in Southern California, I quickly moved onto crafting bikinis, and my creativity has soared from there. I now design and hand-make every garment in a line of women’s resort wear and accessories using natural fibers. I’m deeply inspired by the almost-constant sunshine, as well as the melting pot of cultures that define my neighborhood in West Hollywood. Each of my pieces is born out of a mood and met with many hours of meticulous work.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The path to where I am now hasn’t been the smoothest; there is always a learning curve and life-balance challenges that arise when beginning a new endeavor, but I believe my largest obstacles are still in front of me! This year I’m looking to include partners in my production process, which I expect to come with unique challenges because with crochet, each garment must be individually handmade.

This is largely viewed as a limitation, because of the mass manufacturing norms that feed our culture’s appetite for fast, consumable fashion. I believe specific attention and personal touch are advantages that appeal to a new generation of conscientious consumers who value bespoke quality and craftsmanship. As my business expands, it is my top priority to maintain high standards socially and ecologically at every stage.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Made by Sierra Love is a collection of handmade crochet swimwear and resort wear. As the name suggests, every individual piece is dreamed up, designed, and handmade by me, Sierra Love. Using only the highest quality natural fibers, I specialize in custom-fit garments curated toward the wild at heart.

Unlike knit fabric, crochet cannot be machine-produced. Each of my garments is the result of many hours, often weeks, of punctilious handwork. My collection is currently viewable via Instagram and Etsy. For inquiry or consultation, reach out directly via email.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
If luck has played a role in my journey, negative or positive, the effects are unbeknownst to me. As Branch Rickey wisely said, “Luck is the residue of design.”
