Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Bar
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for adolescent and young adult (YA) health began during my Internal Medicine residency at Kaiser San Francisco, where I had the opportunity to rotate through multiple adolescent and young adult clinics. It quickly became clear that this was the area where I wanted to make a meaningful impact—improving both physical and mental well-being for this unique population.
I was fortunate to be accepted into the Stanford Adolescent Medicine Fellowship, where I gained invaluable experience working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This exposure allowed me to manage a wide range of cases, from high-acuity hospital care to complex outpatient treatment, solidifying my expertise in the field.
Following my fellowship, I continued my work as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford, where I had the privilege of training future physicians while deepening my own practice. My transition to student health was particularly fulfilling, as it allowed me to work closely with young adults at a pivotal time in their lives—helping them build trust in the medical system and develop lifelong positive health behaviors.
I remain deeply committed to adolescent and young adult medicine, focusing on comprehensive, patient-centered care that fosters resilience, confidence, and well-being during these formative years.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a long journey filled with ups and downs, years of rigorous training, and many sleepless nights, but I have come to realize that all of these experiences happened for me, not to me. Each challenge provided an opportunity to grow, refine my skills, and strengthen my expertise—both as a medical professional and an educator. These moments have shaped me into a more resilient, compassionate, and knowledgeable physician, allowing me to make a meaningful impact in the lives of my patients and the future healthcare professionals I mentor.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
