Meet Shannon Corbett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Corbett.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shannon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for acting started at a very young age for as long as I can remember. Watching classic actors like James Dean, Vivien Leigh, Jimmy Stewart, Vincent Price, and Audrey Hepburn on the screen made me laugh and provided me an escape during the hard times in my life. I watched dramatic films where actors got vulnerable and showed their genuine and raw emotions. It made me not feel alone. These actors showed what they have personally experienced in their lives and presented it on the screen for everyone to see. They performed the experiences I went through. I would watch the actors carefully and mimic them. I would have a one-person show with myself, re-enacting the scenes. It brought joy to me, it gave me purpose, a place of freedom, and somewhere to heal and release my emotions! I realized that this was my calling to be an actress. In school, I would perform at talent shows and school plays. I took theatre in high school as an extra class.

On my free time, I would study acting techniques and biographies of my favorite classic Hollywood actors and anything I could get my hands on that was related to acting! In my junior year, My group and I won a competition at DTASC in 2016, in which I did a scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I played Nurse Ratched! In my senior year of high school, I was voted best actress at my school for Senior Superlatives and graduated high school as an honor for theatre! Eventually, I needed to expand myself and put myself out there, so I eventually auditioned at local theatres near me and became a performer at the Canyon Theatre Guild and The Main Theatre. I was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts Hollywood (AADA)and completed a full year. I eventually started doing many indie films and student films, trying to put myself in any film I could. I knew I needed to share my passion with the world. My dream kept coming true, an actress. I never took ‘no’ for an answer.

Has it been a smooth road?
For me, it has been both smooth and a little bumpy! I have been lucky landing roles both in indie films and in theatre. The bumpy parts of the smooth road is when I audition but sometimes don’t get cast for a part. I overcome that bump in the road by remembering that you won’t book every role, but out there, there is a role perfect for me that I will eventually audition for and get cast in! Success isn’t handed to you. You have to put effort in and work for it! It’s a lot of work, but it is so worth the fight! I know there will always be more opportunities for me. You just have to keep on working hard, have faith, keep positive, and success will find you.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I have recently been signed to an agent and I’m on avail for a show on Netflix. I am not allowed to say the show just yet, but I am excited for the future! Another thing is recently, I just got done with a show I did over Zoom with my theatre company The Main, in which I played the lead in “Like Dreaming Backwards”, which focuses on mental health and suicide. It meant a lot to me because I have struggled with mental health in the past and have lost loved ones to suicide, so it was important to put the message out there through acting and possibly help someone who may be contemplating and struggling with suicidal thoughts. We need to watch for signs and give people help they need before it is too late.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In a modern world of technology such as smartphones and computers, it is easier for actors to get noticed by showing our work on social media and YouTube as well as getting involved with both student films and indie films. I believe it is easier to get discovered that way and noticed for your talent and hard work.
