Meet Santa Monica Makeup Artist & Hairstylist: Keon Cruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keon Cruz .

Keon , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been doing hair and makeup since I was 13 , I remember watching movies , soap opera’s tv shows and being mesmerized by the beauty and glam on the actresses, I loved how you can enhance their natural beauty, and the effect makeup can do on roles. I did it as a hobby for my friends , aunts, and sisters. When I was 19 I got offered to model for Old Navy … On the set, I became great friends with the makeup artist. Her name is Alice Farrinas . She invited me to assist her in many makeup and hair gigs. I eventually gained more connections and realized that was my dream profession.

Has it been a smooth road?
Just like any other profession , there is ups and downs… and there is a lot of competition in this industry, a lot of different personalities. I have learned to be very confident in my work and have great communication to make everyone and myself happy at every gig. I have learned how to deal with different personalities. I try to keep stay well surrounded and have a team of positive people who I share the same passion with.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
Growing up I was very friendly, and goofy I made friends quick and enjoyed being social. I also liked to rescue animals. I would find street cats and dogs, and convince my friends or family to keep them.

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
Is just being carefree and silly with all my friends . But I also I played soccer for 10 years, midfield and goalkeeper. It taught me a lot of discipline and skills.

What are your plans for the future?
I would love to work alongside many hairstyles and makeup artist I admire, Tracy Cunningham , Par McGrath …

I am also working on a charity program with my work partner Dinandrea Vega. The Program is called “Set to work” and it prepares women from the Los Angeles downtown women’s shelter to find jobs. My role there is to help them find the confidence in themselves to look presentable and feminine with Hair and makeup.
