Meet Salam Almarayati of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salam Almarayati

Hi Salam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started working as Public Relations Director for my local mosque in 1986, and I worked on conferences, media engagement with editorial boards, government engagement, and interfaith dialogue

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been everything but smooth. I’ve had to deal with crises throughout my work, including the hostage-taking crisis in the late 80s, the first Gulf War, the first World Trade Center bombing, several terrorist attacks throughout the world, 911, the second Gulf War, post 911 national security infringements on civil liberties, and now dealing with the genocide in Gaza and the war spreading to Lebanon it’s just a matter of repeating and throughout the region

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as president of the Muslim public affairs council. We have a government and policy Bureau in Washington DC, and we have a hollywood bureau here in los angeles. We work on making better policies for america and our community and developing better stories involving muslims in media. I am most proud of the work we do in giving young leaders opportunities and hope to be part of our society and represent Muslims in the best form of civic engagement. I am also proud when we empower communities to work with their local officials and engage in problem solving on the policies that affect them. Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a grandfather of two beautiful girls
