Meet Ryan Noggle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Noggle.

Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Indiana was originally home. After twenty-two years there, my girlfriend (now wife) and I moved to New York City when I got accepted into the NBC Page Program. I ended up working at NBC for eleven years, including five at “Saturday Night Live”. I wrote jokes for Weekend Update and eventually Jimmy Fallon’s monologue when he hosted “Late Nite w/ Jimmy Fallon”. But after twelve years in New York, my wife and I decided to head west, as I shifted my career out of late night and into half-hour comedies. I was fortunate enough to land gigs on several network sitcoms, including NBC’s “Marlon” and CBS’s “The Neighborhood”. I also wrote a full-length musical and am currently working to bring it to a stage.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anyone seeking a “smooth road” in their career should probably head toward dentistry or accounting or something stable like that. Smoothness doesn’t exist in the entertainment business. High peaks and low valleys. Feast or famine. It’s a constant roller coaster, but we ride roller coasters for the hills, the free falls, the unpredictability, the thrill. That’s why they’re exhilarating. No one ever says “Hey, let’s go check out that coaster over there — it’s flat, straight, slow, and super fun!”

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a television writer. Comedy mostly. And I recently wrote a full-length musical. Hollywood likes to put writers into very detailed boxes (“He’s a half-hour, multi-cam, workplace comedy writer for shows set in midwestern hot dog restaurants…”), but I’ve always scoffed at those labels. I started my career as a joke writer, then sketch comedy, then animated shorts, then sitcoms. I’ve written feature film scripts, monologues, plays, short films, songs, and now a full musical. I’m a dabbler, for better or for worse.
