Meet Roy Khoury of Roy Khoury Fitness Studio in Newport Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Khoury.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
You know when you get a thought in your head and you just can’t help but to obsess over it until you’ve figured it out? That’s how I am when it comes to helping people figure out how to move better.

I help people move better. In early 2014, I open my fitness studio in Newport Beach California specializing in golf fitness, and movement restoration. My career in the field started back in early 2000’s as I was completing my studies at Cal State Fullerton in kinesiology and working at a physical therapy clinic, it was really fun to see what I was learning being put into action. After graduating I decided to get into personal training and found that most people I work with did not have a great baseline for movement. Most of us walking around have some sort of ache on some level and I found that until those issues resolved people’s fitness wouldn’t really change the way they wanted it to. After a couple of years of spinning my wheels and trying to figure it out on my own, I started learning how broad the field of movement is and since 2006/7 I became a seminar junky. My goal first was to be the best coach I could be. Then I learned that I can’t do everything so I started networking with my local medical community of physical therapists and chiropractors trying to understand how we all fit in the spectrum of one’s health and movement.

Fast forward to today, I have a pretty cool network I call ‘the team’ of trainers, physios, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, and skills coaches with a goal of being the best possible coach for my client’s needs.

My business has changed and grown over the years, and I think will always be evolving to meet the client’s needs for better movement health and performance.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’m pretty thankful and that things were never really forced, and happened organically.

I would say my biggest challenge right now is trying to balance my work life with my home life. I have two kids under three and it’s challenging to own and manage my business sometimes I’d rather sit down and play Legos with my kid. Ultimately, I hope my two boys will see me as a good role model as someone that works hard to provide for their family. They get that message hopefully find a way to do it smarter they’re older I’ll be happy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in golf fitness, and movement restoration. Our mission is simple, we want to help people move better and play golf for as long as they would possibly want. What sets us apart is a couple things, first we hold a high standard when it comes to education. Not just our own, but our client education as well. Moving better, and performing at a higher level means the athlete needs to take ownership of their body. This includes skills practice, physical fitness, food, rest and emotional wellbeing. I use the term ‘athlete’ and while we do work with professional and college athletes, our day to day clients that maybe 35 and working full time with kids, to a retired client looking to avoid back surgery are athletes as well.

Secondly is our network. Well we tend to remain our clients main point of contact when it comes to movement, health, wellness we are not afraid to refer out to medical for things out of our control.

Ultimately, I believe that someone’s movement health is the goal and the most important thing, so sometimes the client may need and adjustment, or soft tissue work or medical intervention to help us get there. So, I am proud of our work strategy and network.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think this is a great city for business is starting out but some basics need to be considered. Is this your target demographic? Does the cost to run your business make sense? How many similar offerings are in your area?
