Meet Rin Gurung Santos of Lighthouse Counseling Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rin Gurung Santos.

Hi Rin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up between cultures in a Tibetan-Nepalese household, I often wrestled with questions of belonging. At the same time, that experience gave me an early sensitivity to nuance, an understanding that people can hold conflicting values, identities, and truths simultaneously. That awareness became the foundation of how I relate to others.

My interest in psychology grew out of a fascination with the self as something shaped by culture, relationships, and lived experience. During my graduate studies, I explored these ideas more formally through research on mixed-heritage identity and belonging. What stood out to me most was how deeply our sense of worth is influenced by how we are seen and reflected back by our communities.

In my professional work, those questions come alive in very human ways. I’ve worked with individuals and families navigating trauma, cultural conflict, and transition, and I’ve learned that healing often begins with being understood in context. Today, my work integrates psychology, mindfulness, and values-based reflection to help people slow down, reconnect with themselves, and live with greater clarity and intention.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth, but it has been meaningful. A recurring struggle for me has been learning how to belong without abandoning parts of myself. Growing up between cultures gave me adaptability, but it also came with moments of invisibility and self-questioning that followed me into adulthood.

Professionally, one challenge has been learning to slow down in environments that reward urgency and productivity. Early on, I equated competence with over-functioning, which led to periods of burnout and self-doubt. Over time, through training, supervision, and personal reflection, I learned that sustainability and depth matter more than speed.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Lighthouse Counseling is a group practice designed as a place of orientation, especially for people who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected. Our work is rooted in mindfulness, depth-oriented psychology, and culturally responsive care. We serve individuals, children, and couples navigating anxiety, identity questions, relational challenges, grief, and major life transitions.

What’s central to our approach is that care is always tailored to the individual. We are deeply client-focused and person-centered, taking time to understand each client’s unique history, cultural context, and needs rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model.

What sets us apart is our emphasis on presence and pacing. We don’t rush people toward answers. Instead, we help them develop awareness, self-trust, and the ability to respond to life with more intention rather than reactivity. Many of our clients come to us feeling exhausted by constant striving, and our work is about helping them come home to themselves.

From a brand perspective, I’m most proud of the intentionality behind Lighthouse Counseling. We emphasizes integrity, presence, and sustainability, both for clients and clinicians. We prioritize thoughtful matching, collaboration, and care that honors the whole person. I want readers to know that this is a space rooted in compassion, cultural sensitivity, and depth, where people are supported in living more aligned and meaningful lives.

How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a meaningful role in both my life and my work. I’ve been fortunate to have access to education, mentors, and environments that supported my growth and allowed me to explore this work deeply. Being in the right places at the right moments, surrounded by support, created opportunities I’m grateful for.

At the same time, many of the most formative moments in my life came from experiences I didn’t choose; periods of loss, major transitions, and uncertainty that required me to slow down and listen more carefully. Those moments didn’t feel like luck at the time, but they ultimately shaped the values behind my work and how I show up for others.

I see luck as shaping the circumstances, not determining the outcome. What matters most to me is how we respond to what we’re given, and for me that has meant leading with integrity, intention, and care.
