Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Werthman, M.D.

Dr. Werthman, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my medical career graduating from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the class valedictorian, having ranked first in his class for all four years of medical school. I completed a seven-year residency and fellowship in urology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Issues of male infertility and micro-surgery fascinated me so I decided to further specialize in Andrology (literally, the “study of man,” a sub-specialty within the discipline of Urology) and was granted a visiting fellowship in male infertility and microsurgery at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Early in my career, I became aware that vasectomy reversals had a relatively low success rate: as many as 30% of the simple reversals did not result in renewed fertility, because the flow of sperm was blocked at another location besides the original vasectomy site. I first pioneered, then perfected a new technique for vasectomy reversal (the mini-incision microsurgical vasectomy reversal or vasoepididymostomy), one which permits a male fertility surgeon to relieve extraneous blockage through microsurgery. This technique allowed me to achieve a 98% success rate for his vasectomy reversals. In fact, I am humbled that many of the urologists and male fertility doctors who perform microsurgical vasectomy reversals today, use the techniques that I developed and perfected.

The biggest challenge any successful medical practice or business can face is complacency. We as a staff treat every patient with the respect, patience and compassion they deserve. These principles have guided me every day since I started practicing medicine and will continue to do so until I retire. I am extremely grateful for every mentor and patient that I have had the pleasure of knowing.
