Today we’d like to introduce you to Phenix Jones.
Hi Phenix, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Ember rise from the ashes Ember, ignite your spark
Since I was a little girl, everyone always told me that modeling is something I should pursue further. But I’ve always felt connected to modeling and singing; it’s a form of therapy for me. It’s how I express myself; it’s the way I communicate. It’s how I breathe. I grew up all over Los Angeles County, but mainly in south-central. That’s where you can say my roots are connected. Growing up, there was very little representation of models that look like me, so it was a little bit scary at first, but something I’ve always excelled at. My friends from south-central love to call me the most dramatic because I was so eloquent in my movement. It was like I was modeling all the time, haha. Everything was a pose or a moment in time for me.
I’ve technically been modeling since I was 17, at my first photo shoot. I had been signed to a talent agency as a young adult, which was such a fulfilling experience that I will always remember and cherish. It gave me everything that I needed to continue my journey in modeling and let me know instantly that this is an industry where I want to leave my footprint. This started my creative journey with music and modeling. I’ve been featured in a magazine, been the face of the Melanin Lab website, I’ve also been featured in Blaine Dean’s photo book and appeared in N.Y.B.D’s music video as his love interest, which was on a billboard in Times Square. Also, having brands trust me with their products, I was featured in Blowlife’s and Champagne Champions’ campaigns. I’ve walked in fashion shows with Milkroom and was on season two of Issa Rae’s Rap Sh!t. I’m now in a place where I can navigate my music and modeling journey without so much pressure and take my time.
I also feature on a project called “Whessst” by the hardest rapper I know SpeakingOfKakes, which was produced by the great THX. The music on this project is amazing, and I’m so glad that I can be a part of something so impressive and monumental that will live on forever. It’s even better because of this amazing project. I’ve been able to perform on a multitude of stages, from the Reparations Concert in Leimert Park with Eric Benet, Sounds of Blackness, The Game, and Rotimi, to Proud Creators by Michelle Stokes and Casey Lee, to Payday LA by El Prez, and Tuffcrowd by Michael Halla Williams, and so much more, and I’m barely getting started.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road; there have been obstacles and struggles along the way, like you wouldn’t believe. Submitting to prestigious modeling agencies not having the ideal look, and being turned away is very difficult in this industry at times. I have had the most dear people to me transition back-to-back, and it definitely sat me down in that challenging time. I miss them all the time. Thankfully, my tribe loved on me at that time, and I was never alone. My godmother made sure I was eating well, haha. The love I received nursed me into a new chapter of growth. So, I remember my name, Phenix, and that I will always rise from the ashes, no matter the obstacles, no matter how scary, no matter how difficult. I will never quit; I will always rise.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Phenix Jones is a versatile professional encompassing roles as an artist, dancer, poet, model, and stylist, among other endeavors I dabble in. These creative outlets allow me to express myself authentically. What I’m most proud of is my ability to consistently show up and perform.
Throughout this journey, there have been many challenges, doubts, and naysayers, which can be overwhelming at times. However, regardless of the obstacles, I persistently show up as myself, excel, and deliver. It’s crucial for me to demonstrate to myself that no matter the circumstances, I remain resilient and assertive in everything I undertake. I strive to maintain authenticity, integrity, and purpose in all my endeavors.
What sets me apart from others is that I don’t want to do the same thing as everybody else. While others may adhere to conventional methods, I prefer to approach things differently. You could say I don’t want to think outside the box; I want to think outside the circle. I don’t want to conform to groupthink; I want to make my own decisions.
I strive to pursue my goals and aspirations in my own unique way without allowing anyone else to influence or deter me. I refuse to confine myself to anyone else’s standards or expectations. Instead, I aim to explore beyond the confines of convention and reach for what lies beyond the sky. Embracing my authentic self and pursuing unconventional paths is what truly sets me apart.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
I have learned through Covid that it’s OK to take a pause. I am constantly on the go, from family to friends, to work, to events, sessions, shows, etc. Covid gave me the lesson of rest and to learn about myself, my tribe, and my community. It allowed me to identify who my tribe even was. So, it’s OK to sit down and smell the flowers or bask in the sun, or engage in self-care practices such as reading, exercising, meditation, and yoga, which I’ve recently learned through my Zen Thug family created by Gizzle. Your body may need rest; your mind may need rest; especially with mental health, it’s very important to take time and heal.
