Meet Paula White of El Segundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula White

Hi Paula, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a native of Los Angeles, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting and Drawing from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While my love for fine art was strong, after graduation, I found myself drawn to graphic design. Despite having little experience in the field, I took a leap of faith—and never looked back! My fine art background continues to influence my work, allowing me to bring a unique artistic perspective to visual design solutions.

Before launching my own business, I spent years working in editorial design for trade publications and later transitioned into the beauty and hair industry, where I created ads, packaging, and promotional materials. While working full-time, I maintained a steady stream of freelance projects, honing my skills and building a client base.

In 1998, I partnered with an established printer, and together, we turned a collaboration into reality—Paula N. White Designs as a separate entity was born. As Principal of this full-service graphic design studio, I specialize in logo and publication design while also offering collateral package development (e.g., stationery, ads, book covers, invitations, event graphics, publications, calendars, and promotional materials), and web and digital designs. I am passionate about my craft and committed to delivering high-quality, professional design solutions at an affordable cost.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. For years, while working full-time design positions, I took on freelance projects on the side. This provided steady and additional income while exploring different disciplines of design. However, when I transitioned to being a full-time independent contractor, the reality of the grind hit me.

Partnering with an established printer helped for a while—we referred clients to each other, creating a steady stream of business. But when that partnership ended, so did the reliable referrals, and I had to work even harder to bring in new clients. It became a constant juggling act, wearing multiple hats and testing new strategies to maintain a steady income. Some months were fruitful, others not so much.

There were many times I considered returning to full-time work, and at one point, I actively searched for both part- and full-time positions. Despite my experience, finding the right opportunity was challenging—whether due to job descriptions, geographic limitations, ageism, or scheduling conflicts. The lack of responses was frustrating, but in hindsight, it was a blessing. It allowed me to be fully present for my mother during a critical time in her health journey.

Through the ups and downs, I’ve pushed forward. The ebb and flow of business is still a reality, but it has never discouraged me from doing what I love. After decades in this industry, my passion for design remains as strong as ever—just like when I first started

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a graphic designer with over 20 years of experience in publishing, editorial, and advertising design. As the founder of Paula N. White Designs, a full-service graphic design studio, I specialize in logo and publication design. I’ve built a reputation for “doing a lot with a little” and take pride in my ability to capture my clients’ visions—earning their trust and appreciation along the way.

One of my greatest accomplishments is the creative autonomy many of my clients grant me—a testament to the confidence they have in my work. While I strive to get it right the first time, every project is a process of collaboration and refinement. What sets me apart is my enduring passion for design and my ability to infuse my fine art background into every project, creating engaging and memorable visuals that leave a lasting impression.

What matters most to you?
What most matters to me is that I’m able to translate my client’s vision into tangible results and I assist in helping them present themselves in the best professional manner. I’m most happy when my clients are satisfied and I get return business.
