Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Harmon.
Pamela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Los Angeles and I’ve Never lived anywhere else. Growing up here my love for natural forms and colors, along with a vibrant creative community has fueled my art. Collaborating with these many talented and varied artistic disciplines always yield a unique vision that goes beyond individual creativity. The exchange of ideas and perspectives with people is as exciting to me as the creation of the physical piece.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Though I love to collaborate, my own desire for perfection in my work and the need to meet the expectations (of myself, and I imagine my clients) can inhibit my own production. Spending hours on finding the perfect execution of an idea or direction can arrest the nature of the creative process itself. I’ve found that stepping back to take a breath, going got a walk can trigger inspiration again and mitigates this obstacle to often create a desirable outcome.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
In addition to commissioned individual pieces, I work with art directors and interior designers to co-create the experience for commercial and residential projects. I love the process of seeing the raw space and collaborating on the type of art which will achieve the desired result.
The unique challenge if each project is exciting and once the parameters of color palette, style, and size are established, my process begins-with studies through the finished pieces to create a unique and intriguing space. I am most proud of my ability to convey an idea and work together to turn conceptual into the physical.
Most recently, I completed a project for the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Cottai Macau. Through the process mentioned above, I created nine large-scale paintings and was able to travel to China to see them once they were installed. This gave me tremendous personal satisfaction to see them as I envisioned from the initial commission.
Although the scale of that project was bigger, I feel the same excitement in completing a project for a residential client who is ants something special for their home.
What were you like growing up?
I am barely different from an adult as when I was a child. I just do more sophisticated versions of what I’ve always done which is making friends, creating art, and doing physical activities. I also love anything game related especially if words are involved. I could read before I got to kindergarten thanks to my mom who made all of these flash cards with words on them.
We played with those cards incessantly and when I got them all correct she would go bonkers. It gave me a lot of pride to be good at things. She would make everything into a game and we were always going to the art store to pick up a new medium to try or paint by numbers. I can still spend hours at the art supply store looking for something new to try or technique to learn.
