Meet Oscar Morales of O & M Leather in Eagle Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Morales.

Oscar started working with leather 16 years ago when a friend needed help in his leather working business. Two years ago, Oscar and Michelle decided to dive off the cliff and open their boutique in Eagle Rock, Ca. Both Oscar and Michelle had spent the majority of their careers in retail fashion and was excited to be their own bosses. O & M leather is a retail space with a studio space in the back, which can be seen from inside the retail space. Michelle also creates crystal jewelry in the studio space, which is also sold in the boutique. All of Oscar and Michelle’s creations are designed and created from start to finish by their hands ONLY. None of their pieces are sent out to be worked on by anyone else. Oscar and Michelle purchase raw materials and design and create a finished product. Sometimes, Oscar and Michelle combine their leather and jewelry in pieces. O & M Leather also offers leather working classes taught by Oscar.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
O & M leather absolutely has not been a smooth road. The foot traffic at our location is minimal to say the least. We realized from early on that we have to go after the business and bring people to Eagle Rock or bring our product to Artisan Craft Fairs. For the first year and a half we hosted a monthly artwalk on our block where we had a different local artist’s work up on the walls of our store as well as bringing in food trucks. We partnered with our neighbors that were interested in participating such as Leanna Lin’s Wonderland and Pop Secret Gallery as well as the ERNC. Unfortunately, the month event just never caught on with the community. We currently focus on Handcrafted Artisan Markets.

O & M Leather – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We create handcrafted leather goods and crystal jewelry. We take great pride in what we create and only use the best materials in our products. Oscar is also making handcrafted sandals, moccasins and men’s oxfords.
