Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Quevedo.
Marissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my craft in makeup with MAC Cosmetics. I was with them for about 3 1/2 years before I decided to take a leap of faith and jump into the Freelance world of Los Angeles. My biggest goal when I started in this industry was to be able to do what I love on my own terms and meet new people. I never thought I would have met some of the people I’ve worked with and it’s extremely humbling.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t. All of my clients have been such great experiences and the ones that weren’t were just an experience to help me grow. The income wasn’t consistent at first, but I continued to build my clientele. Steady clientele doesn’t just happen for everyone, you have to be persistent, it is a lot of hard work. There are times when you take a job that may have not been worth the talent and time, but those jobs are the jobs that get you connected with tons of other opportunities. If you are a striving artist in LA, seize and take EVERY opportunity for any gig you are offered, you never know who could introduce you to a whole new window of work.
Have you ever felt like giving up?
I’ve never felt like quitting, but there have been times in my career where I second guessed my talent. It is especially hard coming into the makeup industry of Los Angeles, you get low-balled and taken advantage of and sometimes you just want to let go of your artistry side and pick up a nine to five job, but I never let go of what I was passionate about. There are ups and downs, and the client’s I have been lucky enough to work with have made the struggle well worth it. I wouldn’t give it up for the world. These experiences are ones I’ll always remember.
Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
Don’t let numbers or people ever intimidate your work. Work hard and always be willing to get out there and hustle!
What are you most excited about these days?
The opportunities I’ve had working with artists, actors, directors, and productions, just being on set, in general, made me proud because of how much my work is appreciated and needed. It will always be the catalyst to my future endeavors.
