Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Lux.
Hi Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I did theater growing up and immediately saw that this was what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life. Come high school, although the theater bug was still very much so attached, writing and making short films/sketches was introduced into my daily life. I used to be part of the school news crew called Caiman TV (our mascot was in fact a Caiman), and I met some amazing friends in that class which I still make films with today! Since moving to LA right after high school, my career has taken similar turns. I moved up here from Escondido completely focused on acting. I remember thinking that all I had to do was stay in acting class and do my auditions and the industry machine would soon wrangle me in. I held onto the idea of that until a virus took over the world and I had to find something else to do. I went back to writing sketches for my roommates and friends to join me in creating and I immediately started itching to make the next one. With writing, I’ve always felt like I’ve had more control over my creative life and it packs that hole of unfulfillment that I’d say most actors have had, at least at some point.
Now though, acting and writing feel like they’re flying a plane together, and I’m so lucky that I’ve found some success in both of those fields now! I’m eager to show my newest projects with everyone who will be nice enough to watch it, I have some sketches in post-production right now and a pilot presentation shooting this Summer! With these, I have the incredible opportunity to act in projects that I wrote, along with an incredible line of talent, both in front and behind the camera. https://www.nicholaslux.com
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Oh of course not! I moved to LA because I didn’t get accepted into any universities. Before my journey had even begun, it was a change of paths, and I was throwing myself into a pot-hole littered one (Only somewhat of a jab at LA’s roads). After spending some time here, I’ve come to learn that sometimes the industry can be especially brutal on your hope. It makes it near impossible to even want to get your hopes up on anything because the “No’s”, or better yet the “Never mind’s” frequently hit you. Even your victories, be it avails or bookings, can be hard to enjoy until they’re over. I’ve had projects that I’ve booked, then they suddenly changed their minds on me, and I’ve also been on set all day only to have my scene get cut and go un-shot. You can even film your scenes and have that footage never see the light of day! With that I’ve learned to treat every step of the way as a little victory, I know I’m amongst the sea of actors that experience this, which is what makes living out here so cool. We can all trauma bond together and get all excited for each other when we work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a filmmaker! I’ve trained for both acting and writing at incredible institutions such as Upright Citizens Brigade, Neighborhood Playhouse, and Alexander Techworks. If you’re looking me up though you’ll mostly see the promotion of my personal projects, I’m constantly pumping out new sketches onto my YouTube channel. I’ve also been involved with some awesome projects for TV, most recently was the newest season of “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction.” Stay tuned though because I’m currently filming a pilot presentation in collaboration with Astral Eye Pictures. Myself and Yelena Friedman get the insanely cool opportunity to write and act for the project and live out the dream!
Some people hate their day job but I LOVE mine. I work as a PA on all kinds of projects around town, letting me spend as much time as I possibly can on set, which honestly has been the best tool for me to learn about what being a filmmaker looks like. Whether it’s a small-budget documentary, a music video for “Future,” or a show on Disney+, I’m constantly learning and even getting paid for it! Can’t lie, the workload is tremendous, but that’s the film industry for you. Love it or hate it, that’s what it is.
Any big plans?
Filming for the pilot is set to finish up by the start of the summer, so hopefully after that we’ll get to jump on pitching it. As far as after that goes, only time and luck will tell. I’m so confident and proud of all the work that myself and my team has put into it thus far, I know that at the end of that chapter, at the very least I get to look forward to seeing how far I’ve come as an artist. Getting to that point is my only goal, that and having a blast while doing it!
