Today we’d like to introduce you to Najja Iman and Sade Amari.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My sister and I started our business about three years ago when we were sophomores in high school. We started off selling basic t-shirts, however, we ended the t-shirt line promptly due to insufficient sales. After we stopped t-shirt production, we transitioned into selling hair extensions, weaves, and wigs, under the name “Fine Girl Hair,” which we started in our junior year of high school. We received a substantial amount of support from customers all over the world! However, after we graduated high school, we began to grow out of the hair industry, as business was quite stagnant. We were ready to venture into our next business, and this is how “Fine Girl” was birthed. My sister and I have always adored Y2K fashion, especially velour tracksuits, a style that was extremely difficult to find. We searched everywhere for velour tracksuits, but we were unsuccessful. We decided that since we could not find any stores that sold velour tracksuits, we would just make our own and sell them. That is essentially the “Fine Girl” origin story. We launched our first Winter collection in December 2019 and have seen tremendous success in the past months.
Has it been a smooth road?
We have definitely overcome many obstacles, but we were always prepared to jump over these hurdles when they presented themselves. Nothing good comes easy! We have dealt with every imaginable obstacle, from a lack of sales to negative criticism and hate from outsiders to poor quality samples and even financial issues. We never let any of these issues discourage us from continuing our business. There will always be some form of hardship in whatever you choose to do, which is why it is extremely important to constantly remember the bigger picture of why we started our business in the first place.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Fine Girl is a female/black-owned business. Our main goal is to uplift girls across the world and encourage confidence. Fine Girl is an acronym that stands for Fierce, Intelligent, Natural, Elegant. Plainly stated, our customers are fierce, intelligent, naturally elegant girls!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Definitely! Los Angeles is a fashion hub. I would suggest a new business to build their brand for a couple of years in their hometown, and then relocate to LA to further expand their brand. Since there are already many brands in LA, you want to make sure that you are ready to enter such a competitive field.
