Today we’d like to introduce you to Mykell Mathieu.
Mykell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story began in college as I pursued a degree in journalism. From there, I interned at KTLA for nearly two years covering the Angels, Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers and etc. I was kind of unsure where my career path was leading me so I took a break. In the craziest situation, I met a friend who would change my life and get me back on the right track when it came to my journalism career.
My friend Keith “GoodNews” told me about his dreams in radio and steered me into joining the show Courtside Radio on his network The Good News Radio. Since then, I’ve made it a point on becoming one of the best broadcasters to do it. I’ve been to able to connect with and have guest appearances from many legends in different fields like Rob Parker, Chris Broussard, Paul Pierce, Glasses Malone, Clipper Darrell, Josiah Johnson and etc. Everything is just on the rise for me and my hustle won’t stop.
Has it been a smooth road?
When it comes to struggles those come in every field. Especially this one because it so much competition. I’ve had to hustle and network like no other coming from a Black owned network. The financial aspect is really tough! Doing all of my work independently means I have to make the right moves. It’s the toughest battle so far but I have to get shit done no matter what.
Please tell us about The Good News Sports, Courtside Radio and Don’t @ Me with Mykell and Alex.
The Good News Sports is a growing sports entity with a lot of talent involved. Names like Nick Hamilton, Mark Gunnels, the ladies of the Hoops Talk podcast, the great duo of Touchdown & Tangents, Mark Bland and the new addition ProFanity Nation. I manage the shows to make sure the talent is doing well, keeping the studio in order and getting our name out there in front of those who can help us grow. Through TGN Sports, I cover a few LA sports teams which is an accomplishment within itself with the company being Black-owned. I am proud of the growth of the shows and all that’s involved. What sets us apart is the family environment we bring and the group of hustlers who have come together to be great. When it comes to my two show Courtside Radio and Don’t @ Me with Mykell and Alex, we get better everyday. We’ve had dope live shows with some big names and our work is respected all over. Without my co-hosts the growth with my shows wouldn’t be where it is. We have all put it so much work and we are just hitting our second gear. I can’t wait to see what’s next as CSR looks to take over the radio game and D@M the great Alex Hymes and I look to reach the levels of PTI, First Take and Undisputed.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe LA is the perfect place with all of the sports teams, celebrities and culture here. With LA being the number 2 media market in the country I think it’s the perfect place to be. It’s a lot of competition but that will be everywhere. The improvement I can see within the city that can happen comes down to one word: TOGETHERNESS. If more up-incoming personalities and brands were to work together, I believe you would see faster growth especially with the Black Media brands.
