Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Henriquez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In high school, I would carry around my point and shoot camera taking photos of friends. After high school, I invested in my first camera and started taking photos with friends and calling it fashion. It was all for fun and worked as a creative outlet. After I started contacting modeling agencies to photograph their new faces to get more practice. Now I currently shoot with models, fashion bloggers and families.
I am currently working on photo manipulation using Procreate. It can be a hit or miss but I believe that’s the beauty of creating, might come out great or might not work out at all. Either way, I’m enjoying the process of photographing portraits and manipulating them using Procreate.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One thing that has been difficult is the social networking aspect of this world. I’m a quiet person and at times, it can get overwhelming working with a group of people on a shoot or just trying to network to find work. Other than that, it’s been pretty smooth but I am now trying to make the jump to become a full-time freelance photographer, which I know will be difficult and comes with its own set of challenges.
I’ve been having fun doing a ton of test shoots and figuring out what works for me and I now feel way more comfortable in my work to make it into a business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
I am an artist and specialize in lifestyle and fashion photography. I believe I’m known for my portraits of people along with my lifestyle work with bloggers. I’m proud of the work I was able to do this year, jumping into product and beauty photography.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I am lucky to have worked with multiple makeup artists, stylists, and other photographers. I’ve learned from them while working together on a variety of photoshoots. We’ve helped each other build our portfolio while learning our own style.
