Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mohua Roy. Mohua was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Marina Lang.
Mohua , can you walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, I’m Mo aka Mohua!
My story is a long one. However I studied psychology in University shortly after which I got married and had a daughter. I opened a restaurant with my husband at the time, however eventually closed it down. Followed by which I was a homemaker for several years yearning to build a career for myself.
I stepped back out in to the professional world as my daughter became a model and I took on the role of being her manager for a while, as she acted and modeled. This was in Singapore and India.
Eventually, she and I moved to LA. One day a director came over to our place and was fascinated by my skills and knowledge of Indian food. He asked me how I had them. I explained that I was a chef and previously owned a restaurant. He pitched the idea of me having a cooking show where I taught my daughter home recipes. One thing led to the next, we had a cooking show and started working on private catering gigs, cooking classes and live shows.
I got to relive my career as a chef. However the major turning point for me was when I pushed for opening a restaurant as a lot of people who watched the show asked whether we had a physical location.
Next thing I knew, we opened a restaurant in Downtown LA- No Worries Curry. This is my pride and joy, probably my favorite place to be. I’m passionate about food, cooking it, designing menus and garnishing it.
I almost feel like I manifested reopening a restaurant as I’d cook for 20-30 people almost every week just to make them smile as I’d have lots of friends over all the time.

Please tell us more about your brand, No Worries Curry
My business is called No Worries Curry. I co own it with my daughter Marina. It’s located in Downtown LA. We sell Indian & Indian fusion cuisine. Since we both have lived in quite a few countries and experienced quite a few cuisines we wanted to bring a slice of India infused with other tastes we’ve experienced. Our head chef – Jaffar has been a part of creating that menu based on flavors we wanted to bring to the table. Our brand is mother-daughter owned and we always try to bring the love we have as a family to our customers and food. We serve vegan, halal, Indian, Indian- fusion food. The most unique aspect of our food is definitely our menu as it has a very homely Indian feel but lots of options for every age, nationality and person. I don’t think that there’d be any individual who wouldn’t find a choice for themselves. I also think our hospitality is tough to beat, as we are a strong team and have so much love for all the customers who come to us.

Marina Lang and No Worries Curry have been great to us and I know you’ve got a great relationship with them as well. Maybe you can tell our audience a bit about Marina Lang and No Worries Curry and your experience with them.
Marina is my daughter and having a business with her is a wonderful thing. As I previously mentioned, the fact that we work together as a strong team really allows us to bring such a strong product to the table. That being said opening this restaurant has been a big challenge. Marina and I opened this location with close to no funding. We went through some extremely difficult months as we did everything to get it up and running. There were days we couldn’t sleep and would spend hours talking on the phone discussing what our next steps would be to get the business to where it needed to be. Starting anything is simple but following it through and fueling it is where it gets hard. Lack of funding was a major challenge. However our biggest obstacle was being shut down for a month two months in to being open over factors that we couldn’t have controlled. It hurt our sales, was hard to regain the customers we lost and survival in general was tough.
I have to say our friends really came through and helped us through these challenging moments. We were very lucky. At the same time we also are extremely determined and resilient women so we fought through and managed to get back open and on o ur feet. I think we managed to overcome a lot of challenges as we had each other as support. A new business requires a lot of support and love to help survive the hurdles.
