Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After college, I graduated in the 90s during the height of the dot-com era, an exciting time when technology was transforming every part of our lives. I have always been fascinated by innovation and problem-solving, so I began my career working for a technology company in Southern California.
While working for a memory manufacturer, I was introduced to the world of intellectual property law, and something immediately clicked. I realized that my background in technology, combined with my growing interest in law, was the perfect foundation for a career in intellectual property.
As I transitioned into law, I discovered how rewarding it is to help innovators protect their ideas. Over the years, I have seen how the right intellectual property strategy can empower entrepreneurs, startups, and established companies to scale with confidence.
That passion led me to found Cohen IP Law Group, where our mission is to make patent and trademark protection accessible, clear, and strategic. What began as a solo practice has grown into a trusted firm serving clients across multiple industries, all driven by innovation and creativity.
Looking back, that early intersection between technology and law shaped everything about my career path. Today, I continue to draw on that same curiosity and passion to help clients turn ideas into valuable, protected assets.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Starting and growing a law firm takes persistence, patience, and the ability to adapt.
When I first founded Cohen IP Law Group, one of the biggest challenges was building a client base from the ground up. Many inventors, startups, and business owners know they need to protect their ideas but often feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the process. Educating clients about intellectual property and earning their trust took time, dedication, and a genuine commitment to helping them succeed.
Along the way, I have also been approached many times by recruiters and larger firms looking to either acquire my practice, merge, or bring me on board with international firms. Those offers were tempting because of the resources and infrastructure they could provide. However, I have always valued the freedom of owning and operating my own firm. There is a personal satisfaction that comes from building something yourself, setting your own standards of excellence, and directly shaping the client experience.
Another challenge has been balancing the demands of running a business while staying current in an area of law that constantly evolves with new technology and innovation. But each of these experiences has made me stronger, more focused, and more passionate about what I do.
Looking back, every challenge and every choice reinforced why I started this firm in the first place: to create a practice built on integrity, accessibility, and a genuine passion for helping innovators protect their ideas and grow their businesses.

My advice to anyone just starting out, whether in law, business, or any entrepreneurial field, is to trust the process and stay consistent. Success rarely happens overnight. It is built through persistence, learning from mistakes, and showing up every day with purpose and integrity.
When I was starting out, I wish I had understood how important it is to build relationships and develop a strong network early on. In any professional journey, the people you meet — mentors, colleagues, clients, and even competitors — can have a lasting impact on your growth. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek guidance, and surround yourself with people who inspire you.
Another key lesson is to embrace change and stay adaptable. Technology, law, and business are always evolving, and the ability to pivot and grow with those changes is what separates those who endure from those who fade away.
Finally, I would tell anyone starting out not to let fear hold them back. Every challenge and setback teaches you something valuable. If you focus on providing genuine value, stay true to your ethics, and keep improving your craft, success will follow.
Looking back, I am grateful for every lesson learned, even the hard ones. They shaped me into the professional and person I am today and continue to guide how I lead Cohen IP Law Group.
