Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Monte.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I was a little girl, I believed I would be very successful. I was an overachiever in school, and I figured I’d graduate college with honors, go on to get a masters degree and then get a well-paying job, and become a badass CEO that frequently made magazine covers.
But life had other plans. I was hit with a series of traumas in my late teens and early twenties, including sexual assault, loss of my father, and an abusive relationship.
The shame I held onto was the beginning of a downward spiral that would last nearly a decade. I was bulimic, self-destructive and had no sense of self-love. The darker my inner world became, the more my outer world seemed to follow.
I reached a point where I knew I had to start making drastically different decisions if I was going to survive, so I began my journey of self-healing. Now I teach other people the tools that turned my life around.
Through raw stories, personal experience, and inspiring interviews, my podcast Mind Love along with and the message I share in my speeches highlight the incredible role of the mind in happiness, health, and success.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has definitely not been a smooth road. For the longest time I felt like whenever I took one step forward, I’d take two steps back, and it took me years to realize most of my struggles were stemming from my own lack of self-love.
Self-love is a tricky thing. If you’d have asked me if I loved myself, I would’ve said yes. I became vice president of a startup that was 90% male, I made good money… on the outside, I seemed to be thriving. I knew I was good at things. I knew people liked me.
But what I knew even better were the ways that I was flawed. I believe now that the way you experience the world is reflected by the way you experience yourself. I had mindset blocks that were holding me back and causing me to self-sabotage.
When I started to work from in the inside out instead of the other way around, my external world began to change too.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As I began to make radical changes to my life, my friends and family started to notice, and I became the girl people came to for advice when they were struggling.
I decided to take the principles that were driving my life to a public platform and launched my podcast Mind Love in December of 2017. The show quickly took off and became one of the top Self-Help podcasts for women, amassing over a million downloads in the first year alone.
What sets Mind Love apart is how raw and real the show is. I like to face topics head on that people don’t often talk about, but should be talking about. I think of it as a bold and modern approach to mindfulness.
I believe that the more we share our stories, the more we’ll realize how truly connected we all are. I believe there are no mistakes and we shouldn’t be ashamed of our experiences. We are all doing the best we can with what we knew at the time.
And if we’re a little more willing to open up about our struggles, we’ll feel less alone. This is the approach I take with Mind Love and what I think has made the show gain such popularity in a little over a year.
Now Mind Love has expanded beyond the podcast to mindset coaching, digital courses, and keynote speeches. I’m hoping to start hosting Mind Love events by the end of 2019 as well.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I absolutely think LA (Santa Monica especially) is the perfect location for building my business. This magical town is full of dreamers, seekers, and strivers. I’m inspired every single day here.
There were times while trying to get Mind Love up and running, when money was still tight, that I considered moving to a less expensive place, but ultimately realized leaving would be a bad decision. The connections and inspiration here alone is worth every penny.
