Meet Marc Robillard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Robillard.

Marc, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hey there, nice to meet you! So I was born in Montreal, Canada, my father was french Canadian and my mother is from Newfoundland, Canada, basically Irish. I was an athlete growing up and almost became a professional hockey player, I played in the OHL, which is like one step before the NHL. I Got involved in music production shortly after my career in hockey ended and then studio work, after that I started writing at a music production house, that’s where I really learned how to produce and write music.

I write music now as an artist, but also as a composer for TV, film, TV commercials, music libraries etc. I’ve been living here in LA for about ten years now and I have completely fallen in love with this city and California in general. I moved here from London, England and before that I was in Toronto. I grew up all over the place in Canada, but my family settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia when I was about eleven years old and they are still there today, my sister, her family and my mom.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely had and am always having new challenges on my journey, as an artist and as a human being. Some struggles that I have faced are probably quite similar to other artists, such as, artistic direction, confidence, financial obstacles, emotional, organizational. Probably the biggest challenge for me as an artist though, would be finding that balance between complete expression in creating, and having the editor in my mind come in, take over, squash it and tell me its no good. I’m sure lots of people have experienced this as well. Finding that balance of freedom to create and then after, having the skills and experience to make the art accessible is an on-going learning experience for me. I’m a human and a creative, so its kind of par for the course I think. There will always be challenges and obstacles in anything you do, its really how you use those experiences to move forward that makes the biggest difference in my opinion. Once I deal with things on a personal/emotional level, then I can usually re-align and move forward wiser, stronger and more efficiently. Some obstacles are obviously more challenging than others and take more than one time to learn and grow from.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
So I write, produce, record, perform, sing and compose music for anything and everything. I do a lot of TV commercials and songs for music licensing, co-writing and music library work as well as my own artist material. Because I have been writing for TV for a long time, I have become pretty versatile, being able to write pretty much any genre of music, including orchestral scores, pop, rock, singer-songwriter, indie, hip hop, etc….But I’d say if I had to choose one, my specialty would be in the acoustic kind of singer-songwriter indie vibe. I’m hoping what sets me apart from others is my viewpoint, my voice, my melodies, my ideas, my way of expression, uniquely mine!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think my ego would say that hearing my music on TV, or on the radio, or in a movie theater, would be what excites him, wink wink! But really the proudest I think, is definitely when someone I’ve never met, expresses their enjoyment or something they got from listening to one of my personal songs, that feels pretty great and meaningful!
