Today we’d like to introduce you to Luther Lizama.
Hi Luther, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from the Northern Mariana Islands, and I started making music when I was around 16. At first it was just something I genuinely loved doing, but over time I realized I wanted to take it more seriously. Growing up on an island definitely shaped my sound and the way I see things creatively. Since then, I’ve just been consistently working on my craft writing, recording, putting out music, and trying to grow as an artist. Eventually I moved to LA to be around more opportunities and creative people, and to really push myself. Right now I make a mix of R&B, pop, and hip-hop inspired music, and a big part of what I do is representing where I come from and bringing that into everything I create.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Coming from the islands and moving to LA was a huge adjustment. One thing the city teaches you fast is that you really have to know how to move creatively, financially, and personally. Learning how to survive out here, build relationships, handle responsibilities, and still stay locked in on your vision was definitely a process for me.
Another challenge was finding the right people creatively, people who naturally matched the same energy, vision, and creativity I was looking for. Once I started finding those connections, everything started flowing a lot more naturally. Staying consistent with music while working and managing life in a city like LA taught me a lot about discipline and growth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I just go by “Luther.” & I’m a singer, songwriter, and artist, and I mainly make pop and R&B music. A big part of what drives me is representation. There really aren’t many artists who look like me in this space, being Pacific Islander and Asian, so one of my goals is to grow into someone who can positively represent our communities on a bigger level. I’m very proud of where I come from. I’m Chamorro and Korean, from the Mariana Islands, and my culture and upbringing influence a lot of who I am both as a person and as an artist. I think what sets me apart is that everything I create comes from a real place and from experiences that aren’t often represented in mainstream music. I want people from islands and smaller communities to feel like they can see themselves in what I’m doing too.
What does success mean to you?
To me success is having the freedom to do what I love at a high level while staying true to who I am and where I come from. It’s also about being able to provide for my family, create opportunities for the people around me, and positively represent my culture through what I do.
