Meet Lourdes Mosqueda of Yuli MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lourdes Mosqueda

Hi Lourdes, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Lourdes “Yuli” Mosqueda, MD. I am a pediatrician and owner of Yuli MD in South Pasadena, CA.

I am the youngest daughter of hardworking parents who immigrated from Mexico in the 1960s. I remember as a young child accompanying my mother to her doctor’s appointments. I took on the role of translator between my mom and her doctors. I was fascinated by the healthcare system and the doctors who were able to navigate the complexities of medicine and at the same time provide comfort and care. This is when I realized I wanted to be a doctor.

After graduating from medical school and completing my pediatric residency training, I began my career in medicine. Over the next 20 years, I worked for hospitals, large group practices, and community clinics. I grew frustrated with the systemic issues that hindered my ability to provide the best care possible. The rushed appointments, long wait times for patients, challenges of obtaining an appointment, the amount of paperwork, and navigating through the bureaucratic red tape for insurance approvals were staggering.

I began searching for a better way to serve my patients. I discovered the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model. In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, I opened Yuli MD, a direct primary care pediatric practice. I can practice medicine the way it should be practiced. I prioritize my patient’s needs, spend quality time with them, and foster the relationships that are crucial to better healthcare.

I have the freedom to focus on my patients. Patients have personalized attention, improved access, and comprehensive care.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my practice has been mostly a smooth road with a few bumps along the way. I have a very supportive family and friends who have consistently encouraged me and believed in my vision.

My biggest struggle was overcoming my own self-doubt. Once I moved past that, I focused on building my practice. As a first-time small business owner, managing the business aspect remains a challenge, but I am enjoying the learning process.

Despite the struggles, this journey has been a dream for me. I consider myself an old-fashioned doctor who values the personal touch and connections with my patients while using modern technology to improve the care I provide. The ability to do this work makes it all worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The patient experience in a Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice like Yuli MD is fundamentally different compared to a traditional healthcare model.

-Patients benefit from longer, unrushed medical appointments. A traditional insurance-based doctor has 2000-3000 patients on their panel. We have about 200 patients on our panel. This allows us to develop more meaningful relationships with patients and families leading to a better understanding of each family’s needs.

-Patients can schedule appointments quickly, often the same day or the next day. Patients can communicate directly with their doctor via phone, email, or text. Patients receive prompt responses even after hours.

-As a direct primary care practice, we have more time and fewer bureaucratic constraints, which means we can focus more on a holistic approach to care as well as providing preventive care and catching potential issues early.

-Transparent pricing. This is a membership-based model. The flat monthly membership fee covers most services, making healthcare costs more predictable and eliminating the need for co-pays and additional charges for routine care. Patients do not have to deal with insurance companies for primary care services.

-We offer convenience with minimal wait times and comprehensive in-house services like labs, minor procedures, medical ear piercing, and vaccinations.

-We bring peace of mind to busy parents knowing that their pediatrician is just a phone call or text away.

We strive to ensure that each child and family feels heard, valued, and well-cared for.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Mentors offer invaluable insights, guidance, and support.

I reached out to a colleague who had started her unique practice. She validated my ideas and challenged my thinking process. She guided me throughout my journey and encouraged me to follow my dreams. My mentor introduced me to other entrepreneurs and provided other networking opportunities for me.

Ultimately, my mentor helped me grow both personally and professionally.
