Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira Leach.
Kira, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Virginia before moving to Colorado, which is where I grew up, went to school, and started dancing. When I turned four, I started soccer, gymnastics, and dancing. Dancing was immediately my favorite! I had no idea it was going to consume my life, but it became obvious the moment I began. It’s been apparent from that age that music and performance were two things that would ultimately shape me into who I am today. The training I received was a huge part of my middle and high school life, especially ballet and classic jazz technique. I was lucky enough to be inspired by other artists at my performing arts high school and an incredible dance studio. I was surrounded by incredible mentors. Especially my parents, who even through hardship have placed so much effort and trust in me in all forms. After graduating I moved to LA to pursue a career in dance and I’ve only just begun. Being in LA in this industry can be overwhelming but working with Will and Janelle Adams pushes me to be better in so many ways. I’m grateful to them for putting me under their wings. Being here is a dream come true and my main goals are to improve every day and remember just how lucky I am. My 12-year-old dream to live here seemed so far away, I will never take this for granted.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My childhood was great, although the road wasn’t always smooth. The 2008 market crash hit my family pretty hard, and there was a while as a seven-year-old I didn’t quite understand what was happening but knew that my parents were working their best to get us out of some tight spots. I transferred elementary schools a couple of times because of bullying, and that’s something that also has inspired me to stand up for others in life. In the end, everything worked out and in high school, I had some incredible friends. This is the best example of quality over quantity. Growing up being super busy with dance didn’t make sense to a lot of people. However, sacrificing things that pretty much everyone wants to do was more than worth it then and is now.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I work as a professional dancer, I go out to work with choreographers on live shows, videos, projects, etc. I love storytelling, and in my opinion, there isn’t one thing that is more important than passion while dancing. The way that I connect to people just feels special, like I am meant to be doing what I’m doing and reaching out to others. I’m proud of the way I make people feel. Getting lost in a performance or even just a video can change someone’s perspective, that’s what I want. I attack everything I’m given and can say with full confidence my ambition never stops pushing forward.
What were you like growing up?
I was a nutcase for sure. I’ve always had a lot of energy. I get extremely focused when dancing but still would consider myself a light-hearted and goofy person. I loved (and still love) theme parks. (You can definitely catch me at Disneyland when I have a day off) When I was younger, my family went to Disney World a lot, and that really brought us together. Since I’m an only child spending that time with just my parents meant everything to me. Golfing with my dad and grandfather was also something I loved doing each summer. One day, at the driving range, my grandpa bet me that if I hit the 50-yard pole with a ball he would buy me a full set of clubs, not expecting at all that I would. Next thing you know, I had a full set, and after that, I just kept going. In middle school, I would host these board and video game nights with my friends, and that still happens when I go home. I love playing and get extremely competitive. It never gets old:)
