Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Medina.
Hi Kevin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Freestyle Football six years ago. I do soccer tricks for a living. I currently represent the USA in all the world championships. I host, manage, judge, and create freestyle competitions, too. Today (2020), I am ranked 3rd in the US, I am an ambassador for two soccer companies, and I have performed in 13 states and 20 countries. I use to run mid-distance in high school and when I started college. My best mile time was 4:19. I needed up tearing my left meniscus from overtraining. I was at the beach one day and saw four freestylers doing a street show. I had always been able to do some tricks, but they blew my mind! I asked them what exactly they were doing (freestyling) and we ended up exchanging contacts. One of the guys asked if I wanted to train one day. I went for it. I couldn’t really use my leg because of the recovering meniscus. I did a year and a half of pure head tricks (uppers). Fast forward six years, it paid off because today, I’m known around the world within the freestyle community for my crazy control with uppers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been smooth, well like anything else, you put in the time, and it will reflect. I practice 3 hours a day for about four days a week. My first two years I would put in 6-8 hours a day. I still have knee problems (now the right meniscus) so leg revolution tricks (lowers) are not impossible, but comes with more challenges; how I execute the trick, how I land, particular restrictions, and more focus on touches. Today, thanks to COVID, this has been the hardest challenge. I have no work lined up. I haven’t had a “gig” since February 2020. luckily I can still practice. I currently have a staple sales job until we can get past this whole pandemic. I’ve gone back to school, too, doubling in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. So, challenges come in all different forms.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professional Freestyler. USA rank: 3rd. Specialize in uppers (head tricks) I have about 12-15 signature tricks that I invented. In the freestyle community, I am known for: a good judge, uppers, the best host in the west coast, stepping two revs, and a flawless showman. most proud of: my work
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I do read books and I prefer to read books where I learn something, But, if I am being honest, what keeps me sane or focus in life, that would be just being physically active. It doesn’t have to be freestyle, but going for a bike ride, a run, or a swim. I just need some time within my day to be alone and at peace. It is my time to reset and it doesn’t matter what the rest of the world is doing.
