Meet Kenna Hummer of Skincare by Kenna in Ventura County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenna Hummer.

Kenna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always known I wanted to be in the beauty industry. When I was younger, I’d visit my sister at the salon she worked at (she’s a hairstylist) and I always LOVED the energy.

It’s so much more exciting than a desk job. I didn’t have the patience for hair, so I leaned towards skincare and makeup from the beginning (I’m guilty of loving those pimple popping videos!). I worked at a few salons, and absolutely loved the people I worked with, but knew I wanted my own little quiet space eventually.

I started looking, and found a beautiful little studio with a great view of the hillside and Channel Islands. I’ve been here for about a month, and have gotten nothing but positive responses from my clients!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve generally gotten really lucky with my journey! Not to say there hasn’t been little hiccups in the road, but overall I try to keep a positive attitude and only attract positive vibes.

All of my clients know that I have a pretty easy going demeanor and don’t let things get to me. The hardest struggle in opening my own space was having to leave the most amazing salon family. But I still visit them regularly! 🥰

Skincare by Kenna – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I own a little skincare studio in downtown Ventura. I specialize in waxing, facials, eyelash extensions, and airbrush tanning. I’ve been nominated two years in a row as the Best Brow Wax in Ventura County by the VCReporter, along with the Best Facial in Ventura County of 2017 and second best for 2018. I really love seeing the client’s faces light up when I show them their results after a brow shaping or set of lash extensions. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing you gave someone a little extra confidence!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is more than just maintaining a clientele and paying rent on time. I think success is loving what you do and making a career out of it. I have the best clients, and they make me feel successful every day.

Knowing that I’ve gone from being a shy, 19-year-old esthetician who didn’t trust her own skincare advice, to a small business owner with a full clientele of amazing men and women that respect me has really made me proud of what I’ve accomplished!
