Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Drescher.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I first started doing magic at the age of seven after watching a man at a magic shop cut a piece of rope and put it back together. That sparked everything-my interest in understanding how magic works, performing for people, and making the audience laugh.
Although magic was never going to be a full-time profession, I had always wanted magic to be a part of my life in some way. It wasn’t until entering the real world and having a “real job” that I knew magic needed to be a career. Growing up in Connecticut was not necessarily the hub of magic knowledge a young professional needs.
I was grateful for everything I learned living there and for a few years in Boston. But moving to LA has helped me grow so much as a performer; taking improv and writing classes at the Groundlings, often performing at the Magic Castle, and having access to the greatest minds in magic has been everything one could ask for.
I now perform regularly in a world-touring show called “Champions of Magic.” When not traveling with the tour, I enjoyed performing for corporate events, colleges, the Magic Castle, and Magic Bar in Encino, CA. I also co-host a podcast called, “Shezam,” a podcast that focuses on feminist issues within magic and hopes to one day make itself obsolete.
Some awards/accomplishments/resume points:
-Winner of David Copperfield and the Today Show’s Search for the Next Great Magician
-Performer on Penn & Teller’s Fool Us
-One-fifth of the touring cast of Champions of Magic
-Teaches classes at the Magic Castle University
-Regular performer at the Magic Castle and Magic Bar in Encino
-Consultant on short films and TV shows
-Co-Host of the Shezam Podcast
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, no way. I have failed a lot and continue to do so. I had moved to Las Vegas for a brief year and really struggled to make a living. Even my first few years in LA were very difficult as I worked to build up my business and my skill.
I’m also very difficult on myself and rarely think a show went well. I’m always re-examining every line and every moment to try and make the show better. However, I’d rather fail a thousand times at something that I love so much than succeed with something I’m not passionate about.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Magic in Heels – what should we know?
Magic in Heels is a fancy name to describe, well, me. I am the CEO and the product. The name came about when trying to make my business pop off the google page. Most magicians used their names or a generic business name like “Black’s Magic.” Magic in Heels just made sense as there wasn’t anything so captivating online.
Within the company, I offer various styles of magic shows including customizable presentations for your special corporate event, trade show, etc. I mainly specialize in a very interactive show, which means the audience is often the star.
The audience really drives the fun of the event and makes each show so different from the next. I’d say that’s what really sets me apart from my ability to “go with the flow” of the audience. I love a good call back that not only is fun for the show but is something that remains a joke with the guests for years to come.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
People often comment on my genuine personality. Many audience members would like to grab a beer after the show. I work hard to make sure the audience cares about me as much as I care about them. I want the audience to feel like we’re just hanging out over some coffee and having a fun chat.
As well, I am a fantastic goal setter. If I want something, I tend to go very hard for it. I’ll lose sleep over plotting how to accomplish the goal. That drive has certainly helped grow my career.
