Meet Julieanne O’Connor of Spelling It Out in Northridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julieanne O’Connor.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up dirt broke with no plumbing outside of Reno, Nevada. I still remember the days we’d sneak to our neighbor’s yard while they were at work to use their well water to bathe. Eventually, we got plumbing, only the water was terribly contaminated. So was the air for about two inches above the soil where we played. We had no idea.

My father died suddenly of Lymphoma cancer and years later, we learned about the toxins we were absorbing, breathing and ingesting. This led me on an incredible journey of self-discovery which unveiled the possibilities and opportunities around living a truly meaningful life.

After committing to myself that I would surround myself with imaginative people and build the most meaningful relationships I could in my potentially short life, I ended up asking everyone the secret to a happy marriage or relationship. That led to my first book deal for a candid book about relationships. Then I wrote a second book about careers and I’m now working on my third about happiness. So many trials and errors have happened along the way but the key has always been a fundamental mindset around the importance of growing and giving.

I’ve had an incredibly diverse career due to my intense curiosity about life. I’ve done everything from starring in an award-winning Super Bowl commercial to owning my own company and giving a TEDx talk, to coaching a very few select high achievers. I am a foster mom, wife and mother. I have a birth child who is generous in the most profound ways and I just completed the adoption of my incredible two year old. Children have graced my life with new insights about how much love is possible among human beings.

I’m grateful for every human encounter I have. I am committed to making the people I meet feel a little more human and OK with their own imperfections. Life is precious and there’s nothing better than finding the good in it while fully experiencing every moment.

Has it been a smooth road?
NO WAY. If life were a smooth road, you’d miss the scrumptious adventures and textures that are only inherent in bumps in the road.

I’ve struggled with everything from rejection, to fear of inadequacy, to fear of dying, not to mention some incredible unexpected situations that have arisen. I expect more struggles and I welcome them.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love LA. It is the land of opportunity. I love that everywhere you look you find people who have big dreams. I also appreciate the kindness gene that seems to run throughout the heart of the people and most importantly the incredible diversity. LA is a place where people come to find the space to dream big. No one has to feel like they need to shrink back into a box in this city. LA itself represents pure expansiveness of a city and of the soul of the people in it. I don’t have anything I dislike about this city. It’s all necessary to make it what it is.
