Meet Joyce Flood of Joyce Flood + Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Flood.

Hi Joyce, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was visiting Los Angeles in 1987 and was given an opportunity by a local design build firm to work for him. After a decade working for him, I ventured on my own. I have my architect’s license by then and he encouraged my solo practice. I knew some local developers and started doing work for them. Twenty eight years later, through word of mouth, hard work, and people seeing my design work, my practice is still thriving. I have kept my practice small so I can have a more personal interaction with my clients.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not always a smooth road. My practice is based on the economic climate. Recession years slow down the business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a licensed architect and I specialize in residential architecture in the beach communities. I am a one person firm with a good group of consultants and builders that I work with. I meet with clients, listen to their goals, present them with different ideas (schematic designs), help get their projects approved by the city, work with builders during the construction stage. At the end of the day, it’s teamwork.
People see houses that I have finished and they ask who the architect is. That’s how I get work. My pride is seeing happy clients. It gives me great satisfaction when I get a note saying how much they are enjoying their house.
Architecture is a science and an art. We deal with life and safety, but at the same time aesthetics is just as important.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Travel is the best way to get inspiration. Whether it’s local or international, it refreshes my mind and my soul. Maybe I’m old school, but I’m not into podcasts or blogs.
