Meet Jorge Marroquin “Dj Cooch”

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Marroquin “Dj Cooch”.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jorge. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The story of how I first got on stage is pretty crazy. I was backstage before a ‪Juan Gabriel‬ (big Latin artist) concert at Universal Studios with a date (Go Me!) I had access because I produced live events & DJ’d for them. As it turned out, Mr. ‪Juan Gabriel‬ had some issues and things were running a little behind schedule. Now the event coordinators for Universal where getting nervous about the crowd, for good reason, they were excited and they wanted Juan. They also knew that I knew how to handle a crowd from seeing me DJ, and asked me, in front of my date, if I would go out and warm up the crowd for a few minutes to stall. Would I have gone out and done it otherwise? Maybe. But I definitely wanted to impress this girl, and what better way than making thousands of amped up fans laugh.

So I took the stage, grabbed that mic, and told a joke that cannot be repeated here! And it crushed. Suddenly the affection of that girl meant a lot less, and the awareness that I could perform and excite a crowd like that changed the way I felt forever. I did material off the cuff for several minutes and before you know it ‪Juan Gabriel‬ was on stage graciously thanking me for warming up the audience. It was a moment I will never forget. I remember a sound engineer who knew me saying “do you realize you just opened up for Juan Gabriel”? All I remember is how great it felt.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think the biggest struggle I have had in comedy is coming so close to getting a big network special and having it fall through. A couple of years back I was being scouted by a major TV channel for an hour special. They were going to come watch my show at the ‪Ontario Improv‬. I had sold out an entire weekend of shows, even for the Sunday show the staff was telling me they were going to have to turn fans away. It was an amazing weekend. When the agents and executives came to watch they could barely squeeze into the showroom and I was just rocking through my headline sets. It seemed like everything was lining up for my big break. I was super excited, and thankful the work I had put in was paying off. The Improv hung my picture on the wall that weekend.

In the end they went another direction, and honestly, it really stung. I had to deal with the reality that I had done a great job and still not gotten what I wanted. It’s something that comes up a lot in the entertainment business and to have gone through it like that was quite the roller coaster. On the plus side, I really did deliver amazing crowds, and fantastic headline sets when I was under tremendous pressure, and hey, my picture is still on the wall so I feel accomplished.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in making people laugh all over the world. I’ve been performing on cruise ships lately for the last couple years and getting to be around such diverse crowds has truly been a proving ground for the crossover potential of my material. Of course, I keep a foot in the comedy club scene, performing weekends around the country as well, I use the cruises as a platform to grow my audience, my act and to build my brand as a comedian. Of course when I’m traveling, I make sure to eat really great food. You have to enjoy the life you’ve chosen, I take that seriously! Check my Instagram.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently planning to record my album. I’ve developed so much content over the past 14 years and it’s time to start taking some of the best and make it into a catalogue that people can listen to over and over. I know that once I lay this first one down, the second won’t be far behind… So stayed tuned People!
