Meet Johnny Chhom of Sweet Grass Sugarcane Juice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Chhom.

Johnny Chhom

Hi Johnny, I’m so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a freshly pressed sugarcane juice concept. I am a first-generation Cambodian American born to Cambodian refugees. This idea came out of the pandemic when I was laid off from a finance job. It turned into my creativity, and I started this brand.

First, I started selling juices out of my backyard in 2020 and quickly saved enough money to buy the infamous Sweet Grass truck, which quickly gained notoriety. From there, after 1.5 years of saving money, I was able to open up my brick-and-mortar in 2022.

It took so much sacrifice, grit, and willpower to get to this point. I hope to inspire others through my actions and through what I was able to achieve under less-than-ideal circumstances.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was anything but smooth. I went into this never having any business experience. The work consisted of early days and late nights. I was overworked, but I was determined, and I worked as if I had a point to prove.

We’ve been impressed with Sweet Grass Sugarcane Juice, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We offer freshly pressed sugarcane juice that is often served in tropical climates of the world.

It is natural and raw form of sugar that has benefits as well as being served as a sweet refreshing treat. When combined with other fresh fruits, it actually enhances the tastes of almost any fruit you mix with it.

We are proud to say that we have built a brand around my community in Long Beach and beyond. We’ve worked with dozens student organizations in the greater Long Beach area and have donated to charities. We have a strong sense of involvement and commitment to serving our community, and it shows because the support is reciprocated well.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
There is so much culture in LA counties and so much diversity. It can sometimes be bad, but I believe we are getting the best of all worlds, because it is such a melting pot.
