Meet Johan Weich of Weich Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johan Weich.

Johan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Sweden, I grew up in a household filled with electronics and art on the walls. My father who is a talented painter introduced me to different types of art at an early age. His passion for different types of electronics and computers has also stuck with me to this day. I believe that my style of photography today can be summaries by those two influences. Editing my images with the possibilities of today’s fast computers and advanced software is how I create my art today.

I came to the U.S. in 2008 on a tennis scholarship. Now I am married, have two kids, and I recently opened up my own photography business. For 10 years, I have slowly developed my style of photography by photographing school events, family members, and everything else I could come across. It has been a long learning process, and I am still growing and developing new techniques every day. However, I have now found my personal look and style of photography which led me to finally open up my own business.

Has it been a smooth road?
Photography is never a smooth road. There are so many photographers out there, and it sometimes feels like there are more photographers than potential clients. However, by finding your personal style, and focusing on the business side of photography, everything is possible. I am still in the beginning of my photography career, so I am sure that I have many more struggles to face.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in location portrait photography. What that means is that I try to use natural everyday-environments to photograph my clients in. I use mostly natural light, but will sometimes bring along a couple of light stands and flashes.

I believe that what sets me apart from others is my editing style. I love to spend time in front of the computer, so each image that is taken with my camera leaves much room for editing. I believe that an image cannot only be captured, but also created. Therefore, I tend to use my camera images as a canvas, and then “paint” my style on top of the original camera image. This is quite a time-consuming technique, but it leaves unique looking images.

I do not deliver any large 50+ image galleries to my customers; however, they will receive images that have been created by me and not my camera.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Since I am relatively new to the industry, I cannot give you good answer yet; However, even though the area might be crowded with photographers, I do think there is opportunities around every corner. This is a great place for any business if you can find your own lane.
