Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Willis.
Hi Joel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a lifelong athlete who has played a plethora of sports but in the end, football won my heart. I played D-1 football for the University of California Berkeley, where I played defensive back. I had visions of going to the NFL making my family and friends proud but unfortunately throughout my college career, I found myself plagued with injuries. It seemed that the athlete gift I was given was also my curse. All the athletic feats my body was able to accomplish where in actuality covering up weaknesses, I never knew I had. As a result of these weaknesses my body finally gave out as I tore all 3 major ligaments in my left knee in addition to damaging both sides of my meniscus. From that point on I had to fight the constant continuum of healing, returning to my sport, and re-injury. After college I gave one last try to striving for something I had longed for since I was a kid and right before I got that opportunity, I again fell to injury by tearing the ACL in my right knee, inevitably ending my aspirations of becoming a professional athlete. Although it was a tough pill to swallow, I came to the realization that even though I didn’t achieve my goal of making it to the NFL, I kept getting back on my feet after being constantly knocked down. I knew I needed to carry this seemingly never-ending lesson of resilience into my next endeavor and lucky enough for me I found that I had a true passion for health and fitness.
As that passion manifested, I became obsessed with learning the ins and outs of human anatomy and how to train the body in the most efficient ways possible. I completed and received an array of certifications, took on training jobs, got experience training a range of people, and really dove headfirst into the world of Health and Fitness. This obsession with the human body began in hopes uncover the true reasoning of my constant injuries but the more I learned and the more I implemented what I learned, I found true joy in having the ability to help people achieve mental and physical transformation as a coaching specialist. From that realization, I wanted to create something that made people feel like the most Elite version of themselves, which sparked the beginning of JayCore Fitness.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always challenges to growing a business in general and I think the fitness industry provides a lot of competition which adds to the challenge of standing out. With that said, I believe that I have amazing members who have allowed JayCore to grow at a much faster rate and the challenge becomes providing each of those members with an experience they can be proud of through and through. So, in short, I would say the challenge is constantly providing an extraordinary service that provides everything a member needs to succeed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty and main focus with my clients is greatly improving their core strength, balance, and overall stability. The is achieved by working with clients in phases relative to their current level of fitness. The reason I decided to focus on these elements of anatomical fitness was due to the revelation that the basis of my injuries came from hidden weaknesses in the small muscle group of my body. If I had properly strengthened my smaller muscle groups as well as improved the efficiency of my core strength, it may have prevented my recurring injuries! By focusing on core strengthen, balance, and overall stability, members will be able to get stronger, lose weight, gain muscle, and tone specific muscle groups in a safer more balanced manner.
I would say that I am most proud of being able to provide a space for members to feel confident, safe, and determined to achieve their fitness goals. With that said, I want JayCore to not only be a fitness platform but a brand that promotes an action-focused mentality, of which has the ability to improve all elements of our members’ lives.
JayCore Fitness was created to provide the Ultimate Fitness Solution for all its members. We do this by not only providing members with scientifically based exercise selection and alignment but also supplying members with an Elite level of knowledge. Rather than providing just “another fitness program”, that may exhibit short-term results, JayCore was created with the purpose to teach members the ability to be fit and healthy for life.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I believe that both bad luck and good luck played their roles in the foundation and progression of my business. If I had not continuously gotten injured, I may have not found my second passion in life, that passion leading to the creation of JayCore Fitness. In addition to that, if it hadn’t been for the global pandemic, the growth of JayCore may not have been possible. Gyms were closed and people were looking for ways to accomplish their fitness goals. As soon as it was cleared to go outside and get active, I was able to provide people the ability to get fit without thinking. At first, I was only able to provide mobile sessions but then as time went on and people became more comfortable, I was able to expand my business services. At first, it was outside mobile sessions, then to outside group sessions, and then finally adding private and semi-private home mobile sessions. So, to reaffirm my initial comment I believe that if you keep your head up, optimism fresh, and determination in tack during the bad times good opportunities may also arise. By taking advantage of those opportunities, I believe you can increase amount of good luck within your reach. If I hadn’t taken advantage of the opportunities I was given during a time of much adversity, JayCore would have been nothing but a figment of my imagination.
