Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Irwin.
Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from college, I knew the traditional 9 to 5 wasn’t for me, and I looked for ways to have more freedom in my career and become my own boss.
I’ve always been creative and had a special connection with stones and jewelry. When I noticed a friend wearing a stunning ring and she said her mom had made it, I realized I could make jewelry myself.
After taking metalsmithing and wax carving classes at a local studio in Santa Monica, I bought a jewelry bench and metalsmithing tools and I haven’t looked back!
I opened my business about two years ago and it’s been such a fun journey. There have been many exciting moments: my first sale, my first pop-up shop, and launching my website, and I feel like I’m just getting started! I can’t wait to see what the future of Violet Moon Jewelry holds!
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. There are a lot of jewelry businesses out there, so I’m always looking for new ways to stand out from the crowd. I’m grateful to have a wonderful support system during the times when growth feels slow!
Another challenge I have faced is finding the right balance between my full-time day job and my side hustle dream job making jewelry. I am constantly trying to find the right mix of being productive, having a social life, and building my empire.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Violet Moon Jewelry story. Tell us more about the business.
Violet Moon Jewelry is handmade jewelry for adventure seekers. I make quality jewelry inspired by my travels that is meant to last for years to come.
Using vibrant natural gemstones, 14k gold fill, and sterling silver, my pieces range from classic to ornate. I use a lot of rainbow moonstone and labradorite stones and regularly work with clients to create custom pieces.
I’m obsessed with the ocean and proud of the fact that a portion of every sale goes to Surfrider Foundation to help conserve and protect our oceans.
I want customers to love their pieces, feel confident that they will last for many adventures to come, and feel good about contributing to a great cause.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I don’t see jewelry businesses going away anytime soon. I think it’s an art form that is ever-evolving and there will always be inspiration for new designs.
I think there has been a big shift towards supporting small and local businesses. Shoppers are looking for high-quality pieces from brands that support the causes they care about.
