Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Ahn and Jocelyn Fee-Miller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Jocelyn: At 26 years old I was a new mom, single, massage therapist, yoga instructor. I needed to move my Massage Therapy practice out of my house and out of other people’s facilities. I needed a professional setting that felt like home. The Long Beach yoga community brought Kailey, Jenny and myself together, at the perfect time, to create and collaborate on our shared workspace. When we started, we didn’t realize that there is an entire industry operating out of their homes- at Sacred Roots we have created a container to bridge that gap.
At first, we were going to have one practitioner per room- five rooms- but the space took on its own agenda… now we have over 23 practitioners operating out of the space and 100 plus patrons a week.
Jenny: It was the perfect time in my life to start a business. I was in a similar situation to Jocelyn in that I was ready to root down and start building my community and my Ayurvedic practice. Having a home base for my own practice was the intention, but it blossomed into something even greater.
We started Sacred Roots 5 years ago with Jocelyn, Kailey, and I with the idea of creating a collective of like minded practitioners to offer our services here in Long Beach, Ca. We also wanted to offer more support for folks through classes and workshops so that our clients could have a holistic approach to their healing. Our events + general offerings have really taken off, and recently we moved locations, which I think is representative of that expansion.
I’ve grown so much personally from this whole process it’s been really transformational on so many levels. And being able to offer a sanctuary for people to find their own peace and healing has been very rewarding.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Jenny: It’s been a smooth road because we’re following our dream and I think when you’re doing what you love, everything starts to align. This of course also takes diligence, patience, trust, and perseverance to continue moving forward despite the challenges.
There’s all the nitty gritty aspects of running a business and it can get kinda tricky. I realized there was more to Sacred Roots than just simply “running a business”. My background isn’t in business, but I was business savvy and I knew enough with the help of Jocelyn and Kailey that we could make it happen. So there was a lot of learning along the way, and still…On the day to day, there’s so much that has to be done, constantly and having help and support has been key. But it wasn’t always easy in the beginning… I think we had this idea that we had to do it all ourselves, and it became really stressful.
Yes, we had support and we were resourceful, but at the same time creating our own personal boundaries and roles took some time and was a huge learning curve. We’ve come a long way.
We are now in a place where we are able to delegate tasks, set clearer boundaries for ourselves, and be confident and honest with ourselves with what works and doesn’t. Having one another as a sounding board and for support has been very helpful along the way. Our community has been beyond supportive and responsive and it’s been great to feel the reciprocity of what we’re giving out and getting back. All in all, I would say that despite some of the challenges, I feel very fulfilled and the challenges help me see where there is space for improvement and growth-personally and for the growth of our business!
Jocelyn: Considering I started with extremely low expectations, this has been astronomically successful! Easy and smooth? I wouldn’t say so, which is hilarious since we specialize in soothing & calming practices. There has been a huge learning curve for all of us, learning each other’s strengths and communication style. Creating roles and boundaries for our collective.
Setting up systems to support our growth and staying true to our unique conscious business model. Infusing our code of ethics into our individual practices and the way the space is run.
We aren’t reinventing the wheel over here, but we are taking a conscious approach to HOW we do things, how we make our decisions… is it from a place of expansion and abundance or fear and distrust?
Raised in a family of entrepreneurs, I did not realize how much I absorbed during my youth until this opportunity was presented. I felt confident in creating a warm healing environment.
In order to do that, step one, realizing emotional safety is key! Coming up against the imposters in this industry is part of our job… gate keepers for trained, qualified holistic professionals. We hold these ancient practices with reverence simultaneously valuing scientific facts – they are essential to create emotional safety.
After building our center for five years, we were asked to relocate, resulting in managing a complete renovation at the new 1450 Sq. foot space – in 6 weeks… (with a new baby.)
This has been the most exciting frontier so far! Luckily, we have a strong foundation of support. We were able to successfully relocate our Urban Sanctuary, thanks to this community showing up and my husband Jason Miller for putting everything on hold in his life to support the construction of this new space. It has been a wild ride and worthwhile.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sacred Roots Holistic Healing – what should we know?
Jocelyn: Sacred Roots is a Holistic Healing center in Long Beach. I am one of the co-founders and current Director of Operations. I offer Self Care Coaching, Massage Therapy, private Yoga Instruction and Facilitate the Self Care Course. I have a background in massage therapy, yogic studies, performing arts, grieving specialist, doula services, real estate, small business management and overall fire starting. We offer treatment rooms and event space for holistic practitioners and conscious minded businesses to blossom. We host the Long Beach branch of Insight LA meditation educators. Our team of Resident Practitioners and Instructors hold space for all people’s healing and transitioning.
In 2015, we started a Signature Massage Therapy program designed for newer therapists to evolve and grow with our team. We offer our practitioners self care treatments, monthly Business Masterminds & opportunities to find a mentor or be a mentor for new team members. We host top ranking practitioners in the area (…according to YELP, we are awesome.) Find Sacred Roots in the top five for a variety of modalities: Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Infrared Sauna, Ayurvedic practitioners, Reiki, Meditation, Naturopathic Medicine, Sound Healing Practices … the list goes on. We are so grateful to have a venue for these high level caregivers to share their gifts!
Jenny: Sacred Roots is a Holistic Wellness Center + Community Hub! I’m one of the co-founder, events coordinator and I manage marketing/social media among many other things at Sacred Roots. I’m also an Ayurvedic Wellness Practitioner + Yoga Instructor.
Currently, I am in school studying Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.
What I’m most proud of is that we practice what we preach. Self care is a huge theme in our business-so much we created a program called Sacred Self Care to share what a difference it makes when we can prioritize our health!
We have such a great event space where so much of the healing happens. As founders, we have been able to bring in transformational workshops and programs that have helped us along the way, and we wanted to share that with the community. Workshops that range from self care, to compassionate communication, womb healing, sound baths + weekly meditation classes. It’s exciting to share this with the community and also to be able to highlight so many wonderful practitioners in our own city!
I’m also really proud of is our work ethics and our eco-holistic approach. We have been awarded by the city of LB a Green Business award! We believe honesty, integrity, and authenticity are important values to work and live by. Making sure we are all communicating openly, cultivating harmonious relations and respecting one another are important and we try to hold ourselves and our work space to those standards. Making sure we are cultivating a space conducive for peace, ease, and wellness for all is important to us!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Jocelyn + Jenny: Let’s just complete this relocation first!!!! Our space is ripe with opportunity. We receive phone calls and web inquiries daily about how to be involved.
We are excited to harness that interest toward more community bonding, more loving kindness, more wounds healing and more dreams being realized.
Most immediately we are hosting an art show in September featuring local Long Beach artist Vagabond Carving, followed by collaborating with him to install our mural concept and glorify the main event space- that will come to life this fall …
People have been requesting franchise information, we are exploring what that looks like. Is it possible to draw this industry out of their homes and away from the exploitation?! It is our wish to empower holistic entrepreneurs to flourish and feel self-sufficient in the workplace.
We are finding a way! A way to support practitioner owned workspaces, allowing profits to go in the pocket of those doing the work! Sky’s the limit, we look forward to what the future holds for us all.
