Meet Jennifer Amezcua of Sugar Lemon Water in Oak Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Amezcua.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been an esthetician for 12 years. I fell in love with Sugaring five years ago when I myself got the treatment done. It was so much quicker than waxing and far less painful. I was hooked! I’ve always dreamed of having my own little studio. After I got married I moved to Utah and my husband and I opened an organic spa and yoga studio called North Apothecary. That was my first experience as a business owner and I learned a lot. When we decided to move back to LA we sold the business Ana I started again here. This time I decided to specialize in Sugaring and really try to build my brand. I launched Sugar Lemon Water in early 2017. It’s been a lovely journey! I love getting to talk to women all day and have that female energy around me while providing a much needed service to women to the best of my ability. We recently added facials to the menu as well and plan on opening more locations in the future, as well as creating our own skincare products.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The beginning of building a clientele is hard… for the first year you are basically working for free doing new client deals Ana specials and barely covering the rent. If you’re lucky like me and have some savings to survive on to cover your bills then the process is a bit easier. Most people work two jobs to survive in the beginning. I just focused on giving my clients five-star treatments and services and really trying to be available anytime they needed me. That has helped me build a large clientele rather quickly. The hardest part for me is managing all of it. The booking the supply orders as well as doing all of the services. I am a one man show! I recently passed to torch on to a professional for marketing and social media so at least that’s off my plate!

Sugar Lemon Water – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SUGAR LEMON WATER is an organic sugaring studio providing hair removal services using a paste made of three simple ingredients: sugar, lemon, and water. This gentle yet highly effective method removes hair from the root in the direction of its natural growth without pulling at the skin. As a result, clients experience less pain and fewer ingrown hairs. Sugar paste is applied at body temperature (never hot!) so there is no chance of burning the skin. With regular treatments, clients see hair that grows back thinner, softer, and more refined.

We also offer organic facials using Jurlique Skincare as well as makeup services.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My clients rebooking every month. Honestly, that’s the best feeling. Every time they rebook I feel so grateful because they can choose to go anywhere they want. Also, that I have only 5-star rave reviews on Yelp.
