Meet Jaylin Sanders of North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaylin Sanders

Hi Jaylin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started dancing at the young age of 6! My Dad turned on the movie “Breakin’” and I was instantly hooked and inspired! I told my Dad “I want to be able to do that!” In which he proceeded to teach me some techniques of popping and waving from which he self taught himself from watching soul train as a kid growing up. For most of my childhood I was focused on Basketball while still doing a very small amount of dance on the side. It wasn’t until I moved from NC to TN in 2016 that I began to take dance seriously. I quit basketball and joined a studio and began training in choreo. I then moved on to train at a couple other studios while also getting street style training at a freestyle session called “Super Session Sundays”. After acquiring different nuanced training I began to do professional dance work in TN. I Then made the decision to move to LA for college and dance when High school was over to fully dive into the professional dance world knowing that LA has the most opportunities as a professional dancer. Since then I’ve been blessed to have worked for/With: SYTYCD season 18 (Top 6), Aminé, Marvel, Dolly Parton, Wayne Brady, Chevrolet, and many more. I strive to continue constant growth while also sharing my knowledge and talent with those all over the world!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My first main struggle in my dance journey was simply picking between dance and basketball. I had so much love for both but not enough time. I knew I wanted to do both at the highest level possible but in my eyes one was much more achievable than the other. NBA or Professional dancer? I chose professional dancer.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Something I also enjoy is the freestyle battle scene. Freestyle is the rawest form of expression I know. There’s just something about becoming the music in real time that makes freestyle so idiosyncratic. But the battle aspect is something I really enjoy coming from a sports background. The fact I can do what I love with a competitive aspect to it makes everything more worthwhile.

What matters most to you?
In Dance, Authenticity. Being authentic and unapologetically yourself is what this art form is all about. The moment someone begins to dance for the pleasure or Approval of others, It makes it harder for people to connect or enjoy the dance because it looks forced. But when someone is authentic it is impossible for people to not connect with them. This is because the dance oozes out authenticity.
