Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Catron.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began singing at the age of two in my local church singing “Jesus Loves Me”. A lady came up and gave me a dollar after I sang. By seven, my parents started me in voice training, and by age eight, I was doing professional work. My teenage years saw me doing musical theater, touring the southeast singing at churches and political events. This all leads me to making a decision to enroll at Belmont University in Nashville to study Music Business. Upon graduating I spent a few years working in artist management and eventually left my day job to pursue music full time. After a couple of years touring as a solo artist, I was asked to join a group of tenors based in Victoria, BC. I spent the next seven years touring with Tenore which took us everywhere from Uganda to the Vatican. During my time in this group we won 4 Covenant Awards in Canada. My vocal coach at the time was Brett Manning of Singing Success in Nashville, TN. Brett had been encouraging me to let him mentor me in the art of coaching. Always having grown up with a mature voice, I felt it would be a good opportunity and give me something to do when I wasn’t on the road touring.
In 2011, I made the decision to move to LA. My first few years were spent coaching for Singing Success and touring with Tenore. In 2016, I made another bold move and left Tenore after seven years on the road. I knew it was time to spread my wings in the vocal world in LA and also decided to leave Singing Success. At this time, I established the Vocal Lab LA. It was my desire to have a studio that speaks into the mind, body, and soul of the singer. Here is a blurb I use to explain my studio:
Jason Catron is an internationally sought after vocal coach from Los Angeles, CA. He has worked with stars in all areas of music, film, tv and Broadway. Some of his notable clients include Kiefer Sutherland, Candace Cameron, Why Don’t We, LANY, COIN, Poppy, and Debby Ryan. He also travels the world working with worship teams, speaking at universities and hosting vocal masterclasses. With over ten years of experience touring as a professional musician, Jason brings real-world knowledge to his holistic approach of building the voice and artist.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think any creative journey is smooth, nor is it supposed to be. It’s in the valleys and the mountain tops that the creative soul finds clarity and direction.
I think anyone who is creative or starts a new business faces many challenges and struggles. Most often it is having enough money to build what you are dreaming. Time management can also be a huge challenge. But I have always tried to operate my career and business by always being available. I genuinely love people and for me music and collaboration have allowed me to follow and live out my dreams.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Vocal Lab LA story. Tell us more about the business.
Vocal Lab LA is a vocal coaching studio primarily. We offer one on one voice lessons, vocal master classes, vocal production and on-line coaching platforms. I spend most of my time developing talent in LA, Nashville, and Norway.
I am most proud of our ability to collaborate and connect our clients to other people and resources that can help them succeed in today’s music industry. I believe a coach/mentor and a great attorney are a singer’s best assets. They are crucial for building a team and going to the next level. My role is to make sure the singer is healthy and vocally prepared.
LA is full of voice teachers, but I feel that my time spent touring as an award-winning tenor, my pedigree (having been trained by Brett Manning. Brett was trained by Seth Riggs), and my approach to helping the singer find balance in their voice and overall life (mind, body, soul, voice approach) helps the singer find the confidence to go after their dreams. I fully believe confidence is the key to success.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure I believe in luck. Sure people get lucky breaks it may seem, but underneath it all lies hard work, a lot of sweat and tears, The voice deserves to be treated with respect and attention to Mastering the art of singing. All other disciplines from the arts to sport to business require it. If luck is a thing, I thing it is found in connecting and collaborating with as many people as you can. Networking allows for connections and timing to meet the person who’s prepared for the moment to rise to their success.
